Knights Top Caldwell In Non-Conference Tilt

Box Score

FLUSHING, N.Y. - On a cold freezing Wednesday afternoon, the Queens College baseball team picked up 6-1 victory over Caldwell in the first of three scheduled matchups against the Cougars this season. With the win, the Knights improved to 11-14, while the Cougars dropped to 7-11 on the season.

The Knights opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as junior Kevin Kolesar stole third base, and came home after the throw down was off line.  Sophomore Karl Klesin drove in what turned out to be the winning run as he singled to left field, sending freshmen Andrew Navarez home.

Queens extended its lead in the seventh inning after Caldwell starting pitcher Anthony Tornatore loaded the bases to end his day on the mound. Senior Matt Dawkins extended the lead further as he singled to first base, allowing junior Joseph Pidoto to score. Two batters later, Klesin added two more runs after a single down the left line score Dawkins and freshmen Nick Meola.

The Cougars got on the board in the eighth inning after sophomore reliever Keith Rogers got into trouble. Michael Bernstein singled to right field to score Paul Marinello to cut into the deficit. Junior Yakov Trukhin ended the inning with a strike out of Jeannette, leaving two Cougars on base. The Knights closed the scoring in the bottom of the inning after pinch hitter Jorge Toribio singled to right center to drive in senior James Donohue.

Sophomore starter Michael Lamneck (1-2) picked up his first win of the season with strong six innings, as he struck out a season high seven and allowed just three hits. Tornatore (0-1) took the loss as he gave up four hits, two walks and three runs.

UP NEXT: The Knights travel to Sparkill, N.Y. Friday for an East Coast Conference battle against the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans (20-7, 6-2 ECC) with first slated at 3:30 pm from the Provident Bank Park.
