Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team captured a 7-1 victory over Mercy Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference action at Hennekens Stadium. The win moved the Knights to 20-22 on the season, eclipsing the 20-win mark for the first time since 1998.
Junior Joseph Broderick went the distance in the win, allowing one unearned run over nine innings. The righty scattered four hits and two walks this striking out nine.
Senior Matt Dawkins set the tone at the top of the order, collecting three hits and scoring twice. Junior Kevin Kolesar reached base three times, while junior Diego Gonzalez had two runs batted in. Junior Joseph Pidoto had two hits and scored twice, while senior James Donohue drove in two runs.
Kolesar got the Knights on the board in the fifth, when his single to left center scored Dawkins. An inning later, Matthew Walsh drove in Pidoto with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Knights pushed across five runs in the eighth inning. Sophomore Thomas Parish dropped down a sacrifice bunt with runners on first and second. The throw to first went high over first, and allowed Joe Morris to score QC's third run.
Later in the frame, Donohue drove in Parish and Pidoto with a single to the right side. Gonzalez followed with a single to right, scoring Donohue and Dawkins.
Mercy plated its lone run in the ninth inning on a single by Kenny Costa. Matt Nalbone took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned in seven innings. Manny Velasquez was charged with four runs, one earned, in relief.
Prior to the game, QC's final home weekend contest, the Knights recognized departing seniors Donohue, Dawkins, John Dondero, Brandon Burrell, JP Koulotouros and Calvin Luk. The Knights and Mavericks conclude their four games series tomorrow afternoon with a double header beginning at 12:00 pm.
