Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team dropped both ends of a non-league double header Sunday afternoon to New Haven. The Chargers captured game one 4-3, before picking up a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.
Junior Jorge Ruiz (Shirley, N.Y.) posted a 4-7 effort at the plate over the two games, with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Sophomore Karl Klesin (Glendale, N.Y.) collected two hits, while junior Kevin Kolesar (New City, N.Y.) reached base twice, stole two bases and drove in a run.
In the opener, the two teams played five scoreless frames before the Chargers pushed four runs across in the top of the sixth. Robert Petrillo delivered a sacrifice fly to center, before Jack Zagaja delivered a three-run home run to left.
In the bottom of the sixth, QC trimmed the deficit to one with three runs. Singles by Ruiz and Klesin bookended a hit by pitch to sophomore Billy Mclean (Williston, N.Y.) to load the bases. Junior Joe Morris (Syosset, N.Y.) delivered a pinch hit RBI groundout, before senior Matt Dawkins (Englewood, N.J.) drove in a run with a single to right and Kolesar picked up an RBI groundout to first.
The Knights squandered several early opportunities in game one, as they left five runners on over the first three innings. Overall, QC stranded eight runners on base in the contest.
Vincent Aprea pitched five innings, allowing three runs and five hits while striking out six to earn the win. Will Aldam recorded the final six outs for New Haven to earn the save.
Junior John Dondero (East Islip, N.Y.) took the loss for the Knights, allowing two runs, one earned in 5.1 innings of action with six strikeouts. In relief, sophomore Cameron Burt (Mattituck, N.Y.) delivered an inning and a third of scoreless ball.
Similar to game one, the two teams could not push across a run before the Chargers broke through in the fifth inning. Nick Russo delivered an RBI triple, and later scored on a wild pitch. Two unearned runs later came across with two outs in the inning. Petrillo drove in the final New Haven run in the seventh with a single.
The Knights were held to four hits by Chargers starter Kellen Croce, who went the distance while striking out nine batters. Junior Joseph Broderick (West Islip, N.Y.) went 4.2 innings for QC, allowing four runs, two earned, while striking out one.
The Knights are back in action Saturday, Mar. 12 for a home double header against Southern Conn. St (12:00 pm).
