Knights Split ECC Double Header At Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. - The Queens College baseball team opened its 2016 East Coast Conference Friday afternoon on the road against Bridgeport.  The two teams split the two games with the Purple Knights taking game one, 10-4, and the Knights coming back to win game two, 3-1.

In game one, junior Kevin Kolesar led the way with a 4-5 effort, with two runs scored and a run batted in.  Sophomore Thomas Parish and senior Matt Dawkins also posted multi-hit efforts in the opener.

The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Kolesar drove in Parish with a single to center field.  Sophomore Karl Klesin then came home on a double steal, as Kolesar headed down to second.  Kolesar later came around on a single to center by junior Jorge Ruiz.

Ruiz later drove in Kolesar in the third inning on a sacrifice fly, which gave QC a 4-1 lead.  The Purple Knights countered the momentum of the game with a four run fifth inning, and later added three runs in the seventh.

Casey McCone and Alnaydo Rodriguez each drove in three runs in the opener for Bridgeport.  Senior Calvin Luk (1-1) took the loss for Queens, allowing five runs in 4.1 innings of work while striking out five.

Trailing 1-0 in game two, the Knights pushed across two runs in the top of the third inning.  Klesin drove in senior James Dononhue, with a single to the right side.  Parish also scored an unearned run on the play after an error by the UB infield.  Klesin then drove in Parish, who reached with a single, with a single to left in the top of the seventh.

Game two starter Brandon Burrell (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one run in 6.0 innings, with seven strikeouts.  Ruiz recorded the finals three outs for his second save of the season.
