Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Queens College baseball team completed a weekend series victory over Southern Conn. St, splitting a double header Sunday at SCSU Ballpark. The Knights dropped game one 9-7 before winning the nightcap 4-3.
Thomas Parish led the Knights with four hits in seven trips to the plate, and also scored three runs. Junior Jorge Ruiz drove in four runs with three hits, scored twice and earned the save in game two in relief.
Ruiz got the scoring going for the Knights with a two run double to left in the fifth inning. Junior Kevin Kolesar followed with a double to center, scoring Ruiz and Parish. The Knights added their fifth run in the sixth frame, on an RBI groundout by Ruiz.
The Owls broke out with eight runs in the seventh inning, with Mike DeMartino picking up RBIs in two plate appearances for Southern Conn. St. in the frame.
The Owls added their ninth run the following inning, to take a four run lead. QC rallied with two runs in the ninth before the door was shut, as Kolesar scored on an infield error and senior Matt Dawkins crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.
Queens starter Joseph Broderick pitched well before getting into trouble, finishing with a line of five runs allowed, four earned, on five hits and three walks. Michael Lamneck took the loss for the Knights, allowing three runs without recording an out.
QC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two, as Parish scored on an Owls error, and Joseph Pidoto drove in a run with a double down the line to left.
Southern Conn. St. responded with three runs in the bottom of the second. Kyle Hart and Nick Lamberti delivered run scoring hits and Joe Uccello picked up a sacrifice fly to center.
The Knights picked up the game winning runs in the top of the seventh. Ruiz delivered a double to right field, scoring Parish. He later scored on a SCSU error.
Ruiz then shut the door with two strikeouts in the bottom of the frame for his first save of the inning.
Brandon Burrell picked up the win, allowing three runs in six innings while striking out four. Brandon Rent took the loss for the Owls.
The Knights are back in action Wednesday in a home contest against Concordia.
