Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team sent the seniors out with a pair of wins on Saturday, defeating Mercy 11-1 and 12-2 in an East Coast Conference doubleheader played on the baseball field in Flushing. The seniors honored prior to the game were Dan Walsh, Greg Gonzalez, Crissandry Javier, Francesco Monastra, Joseph Paparella and C.J. Gerdowsky.
Game one featured another dominating pitching performance from freshman, Cameron Burt. The righty pitched six innings, didn't allow a run and struck out eight. Eight of the nine hitters in the lineup had at least one hit and the team roped 13 hits.
QC got solo runs in the third and fourth and broke the game open in the fifth. Joe Morris singled and Matt Dawkins walked in the third. Kevin Kolesar singled to center and Morris scored. An inning later, Walsh doubled and scored when James Donohue reached on a bunt, but the ball was thrown away.
Queens scored six runs in the fifth to break the game open. Up 2-0, the Knights loaded the bases when Morris and Thomas Parish were hit by pitches and Dawkins walked. From there, Kolesar cleared the bases with a triple to right. Diego Gonzalez followed with an RBI single. Paparella picked up an RBI on a single and Gerdowsky brought in the final run on a line drive that was caught and thrown away for an error.
QC scored three times in the eighth to seal the win. Walsh worked a bases loaded walk and Paparella brought in a pair on a single.
Game two saw Joseph Broderick toss six innings to earn the win. He struck out ten.
QC fell behind 1-0 in the first, but tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Dawkins stole third and scored on an errant throw. Queens took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the second. They got a run on a Mercy error and got the other run on a suicide squeeze from James Donohue.
Queens scored five times in the sixth to win the game. Dawkins drove in a pair with a double. Dan Walsh brought in a run with another double. Matthew Walsh scored one on a base hit.
The Queens College baseball team has now won five straight. They are going for the sweep against Mercy when the two sides meet at noon on Sunday in Dobbs Ferry.
