Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with LIU Post on Saturday in Flushing. They lost the opener, 6-0 and rebounded to win the nightcap, 5-4.
The Knights managed four hits in the opener, including a double from Joseph Paparella. Diego Gonzalez, Nick Morici and James Donohue had the other hits in the game. Michael Lamneck pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out three along the way.
In game two, Joseph Broderick pitched a complete-game to earn his first win of the season. He threw all seven innings, gave up just two earned runs and fanned seven batters.
QC jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second. In the first, Thomas Parish led off with a single. Matt Dawkins followed with a base hit. Gonzalez laced an RBI single that scored Parish. In the second, Kevin Kolesar singled. He moved to second on a sacriice bunt and made it to third on a passed ball. From there, Joe Morris grounded into a force play that scored Kolesar for the RBI.
The 2-0 lead was short lived as the Pioneers scored a couple in the third to even the score. They went ahead 4-2, with a pair of runs in the sixth. So, the Knights trailed 4-2 as they took their final at-bats of the game.
With one out, Kolesar walked. Paparella singled to center and two batters later, Morris walked to load the bases with two outs. Parish, the team's leading hitter, came up with the winning runs on base. He ripped a grounder to that was thrown off line to first. Parish and the first baseman collided and the ball jerked out of his glove and went down the right-field line. With outs, the runners went on contact. Kolesar and Paparella scored easily to tie the game. Morris sprinted home with the walk-off run and the Knights scored three times in the seventh to win, 5-4.
These two teams conclude their series on Sunday, April 26, with a single game at LIU Post. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
