Box Score 2 Hempstead, N.Y. - After getting four strong innings from Cameron Burt in a loss on Friday, the Knights got a pair of decent starts from Joseph Broderick and Calvin Luk, but were swept by Molloy in a doubleheader, 4-3 and 9-8. The games were played at Mitchell Field in Hempstead, New York.
In the opener, Joseph Broderick tossed 7.1 strong innings. He gave up two runs on three hits and struck out five. Broderick earned a no decision.
Queens took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second. Matt Dawkins laced a one-out single to left. Dan Walsh drove him in with an RBI double down the left field line. James Donohoue followed with a single and later stole second to put runners on second and third. Two batters later, Nick Morici reached base on a grounder that was misplayed for an error. Walsh scored and the Knights led 2-0.
That score stood until the seventh when QC pushed another run across. Walsh led off the inning with a solo home run to left, his second homer in less than a week. Queens was up 3-0.
The Lions got a run back in the bottom of the frame. Molloy got a single, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a sac fly and the score was 3-1.
Thomas Zaki relieved Broderick in the eighth and the Lions ralled to score three runs and win 4-3. In the game, Donohue had three hits. Dawkins and Walsh had two hits apiece.
Game two saw Luk pitch six innings. He gave up five runs, but had a chance to win the game.
Queens fell behind 4-0 after three innings of play. They got two back in the fourth and another in the fifth. In the fourth, Diego Gonzalez led off with a single. He moved to second on a ground out. From there, Peter Caravousanos ripped a grounder to third that was misplayed for an error. Gonzalez scored and QC got on the board. Later in the inning, C.J. Gerdowsky singled and Anthony Nunez walked. Thomas Parish got an RBI with a walk that forced in Caravousanos.
In the fourth, Dan Walsh singled. Gonzalez ripped a double that moved Walsh to third. Dawkins grounded out, but Walsh came in on the play.
Molloy answered with one in the fifth to push the lead to 5-3. Queens rallied in the sixth, though and scored five times to take an 8-5 lead.
With one out, Nunez walked and got to second on a wild pitch. Parish singled to center and Nunez scored. Kevin Kolesar reached on a fielder's choice that eliminated Parish for the second out. Walsh followed with a walk and then Gonzalez ripped an RBI single down the line, scoring Kolesar and tying the game at 5-5. Dawkins was next and the outfielder ripped a ball that was misplayed at second for an error. Walsh came in and the Knights led, 6-5. Caravousanos followed and the infielder laced a single to right-center that scored Gonzalez and Dawkins.
The Knights were unable to hold the lead as Molloy rallied to win 9-8. These two teams close out their series on Sunday, April 19, with a single game from Queens. The first pitch is slated for noon.
