Box Score Flushing, N.Y. - Queens College senior first baseman, Dan Walsh kncoked his first homer of the season and drove in four to lead the Knights to a 6-0 shutout of Briarcliffe College in a game played on the baseball field in Flushing on Wednesday. Brandon Burrell started for Queens and earned his first win of the season.
Burrell dominated from the outset, pitching six shutout innings, fanning six and not allowing a hit. Queens gave him two runs to work with in their first at-bat when Thomas Parish led off the game with a double. Three batters later, Walsh lifted a fly ball to left kept carrying and landed past the outfield fence and in front of the high fence for a two-run shot.
QC doubled its lead with two more runs in the fifth. C.J. Gerdowsky, who played right field for the first time in his career, led off with a walk. Parish followed with a base hit to left. Parish would be eliminated at second on a Kevin Kolesar fielder's choice, but Gerdowsky and Kolesar came in on a two-RBI single from Walsh. Queens led 4-0 after five and Walsh accounted for all four runs.
The Knights closed out the scoring in the seventh. Kolesar and Diego Gonzalez reached on singles and pulled off double steals. Dan Walsh walked to load the bases. Later in the inning, Matthew Walsh was hit by a pitch and Kolesar scored. After that, Peter Caravousanos laced a single to left that scored Gonzalez. Dan Walsh tried to score as well, but was gunned down at the plate. Queens held on for a 6-0 win.
After Burrell, Thomas Zaki, Francesco Monastra and David Hernandez all threw a scorless innning of relief. The Bulldogs had only three hits.
With the win, the Knights improved to 7-15 overall and have won their last two contests. They return to action on Friday, April 17, when they host Molloy at 3:00 PM.
