Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team had a pair of strong starts from Joseph Broderick and Calvin Luk on Sunday to split a doubleheader with St. Thomas Aquinas, dropping the opener 6-3 and winning the second game, 6-4.
Broderick was the hard luck loser the opener, as he threw 6.1 innings, allowed just one earned run and struck out seven. He only gave up four hits. STAC got a run in the third and another in the fifth to lead 2-0 before the Knights got on the board in the sixth.
Matt Dawkins led off with a walk. He got to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on another wild pitch. Two batters later, Diego Gonzalez connected on a sacrifice fly to left center that scored Dawkins and made the score 2-1 for the Spartans.
STAC came back with a run in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead, but QC answered with a run in the eighth. Matthew Walsh walked and Crissandry Javier came in to run for him. Dan Walsh doubled to left center and Javier advanced to third. He came in on a Gonzalez squeeze bunt to first. The Knights scored again in the ninth when C.J. Gerdowsky worked a bases loaded walk. The Spartans took the opener, 6-3.
Luk pitched well and got the win in the second game. Michael Lamneck threw the final three innings to earn a save. Luk threw six innings and gave up one earned run to earn his first win of the season.
QC took a 1-0 lead in the first when Thomas Parish walked, stole second and reached third on a ground out. He came in to score on a wild pitch.
STAC scored a pair in the third to grab a 2-1 lead, but the QC bats got hot in the fifth as they scored four runs. Gerdowsky got the rally going with a double to left. James Donohue followed with a single through the right side that plated Gerdowsky. Parish followed with a single to center. Kevin Kolesar was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded for Peter Caravousanos.
The designated player came through as Caravousanos was hit by the pitch, earning and RBI and focing home Donohue. Dan Walsh reached on a fielder's choice that scored Parish. After the next two batters struck out, QC completed the scoring when Paparella was hit by the pitch, forcing home Kolesar. The Knights scored four times in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
The Knights added a run in the seventh on a pair of singles from Walsh and Joe Morris. Walsh later came in on an error.
The Queens College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 15, when they host Briarcliffe Colege at 3:30 PM.
