Queens College Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Bridgeport

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team split a pair of game swith Bridgeport on Saturday in Flushing.  The Knights lost the opener, 8-3, but rebounded to win the second game, 4-1.  Both games were played at QC due to the field conditions in Bridgeport and the Knights were the visitors for both games.

 

Joseph Broderick took the mound in game one for Queens.  He was touched up for four runs in the first.  He rebounded though, and struck out five in six innings of work.  Down 4-0, Queens pushed a run across in the fourth.

 

Joseph Paparella led off with a single.  Thomas Parish walked and Anthony Nunez was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded for Matt Dawkins.  Dawkins earned an RBI with a walk that forced in Paparella.

 

Queens got another run in the fourth.  Matt Walsh led off with a walk.  Paparella followed with his second hit of the game and Walsh moved to third.  Parish then grounded out to first but scored Walsh for the RBI.  QC trailed 4-2.

 

The Knights got as close as 4-3 with another run in the fifth.  With two outs, Kevin Kolesar singled.  Karl Klesin reached on a walk.  From there, they pulled off a double steal and QC had runners on second and third.  Kolesar came in on the second wild pitch of the inning.

 

The Purple Knights got a run in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 5-3.  They scored three more times in the eighth and went on to win, 8-3.

 

Cameron Burt tossed six innings in game two to improve to 2-1 on the season.  He allowed three hits and struck out ten.  Dan Walsh pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his second save of the year.

 

Queens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Parish led off the game with a single.  He moved to second on a ground out.  Two batters later, Diego Gonzalez reached on an error.  Dan Walsh made the score 1-0 when he ripped on RBI single to left that scored Parish.  Dawkins then put QC up 2-0 with an RBI double to right center that scored Gonzalez.

 

Queens made the lead 4-1 with two more runs in the seventh.  Nunez ripped a one-out single to center.  Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and then Nunez and Gonzalez pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third.  Dan Walsh struck out and Dawkins was walked to load the bases.  Kolesar then ripped a base hit that scored Nunez and Gonzalez and Queens led 4-1.

 

Queens and Bridgeport will conclude their four game series on Monday, March 30.  The teams will faceoff at 3:00 PM in Queens.
