QC Baseball Moves Over .500 Mark with Doubleheader Sweep of Caldwell

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team improved to 3-2 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Caldwell 5-2 and 8-3.  The Knights got a pair of strong pitching performances from Joseph Broderick and Cameron Burt.

 

In game one, Broderick was dominant.  The sophomore threw six innings and was touched for just one hit, a two-run homer in the sixth.  He retired the first 12 batters before walking a man in the fifth.  The Knights gave Broderick a 1-0 lead in the first when Thomas Parish walked and later scored on a wild pitch.  Broderick left the game after six innings and trailing 2-1.

 

The Knights trailed 2-1 heading into the eighth inning.  The first three batters reached base on a fielding error and two walks.  From there, Joe Morris was sent up as a pinch hitter and the sophomore tied the game at 2-2 after he was hit a pitch, scoring Kevin Kolesar.  The next batter was Dan Walsh.  The first baseman then blasted a double to left that cleared the bases and put QC ahead, 5-2.  The Cougars went in order in the ninth and Queens had a 5-2 win.

 

Yakov Trukin and Calvin Luk combined for three scoreless innings of relief, with Luk picking up the victory.

 

Game two saw Burt throw five innings without allowing an earned run.  He struck out eight en route to the victory.

 

Caldwell scored a pair of unearned runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead.  Queens responded by scoring three times in the bottom of the first.  Parish and Kolesar each singled.  Matt Dawkins walked to load the bases.  Diego Gonzalez then blasted a double to left center scoring Parish and Kolesar to tie the game.  Two batters later, Walsh singled up the middle to score Dawkins and put QC ahead, 3-2.  Gonzalez picked up his third RBI in the second after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

 

Joseph Paparella and Peter Caravousanos led off the third with walks.  C.J. Gerdowsky put the Knights up, 5-2 with an RBI single that plated Paparella.  Thomas Parish followed with an RBI base hit that scored Caravousanos.  Gerdowsky later scored on a wild pitch and an error and Queens led 7-2 after three innings.

 

Both teams scored a run in the sixth.  The Knights got theirs on an RBI double from Gonzalez.  They went on to win 8-3.  Gonzalez led Queens with a pair of hits and four RBI.  Parish had two hits and scored twice.
