Lyndhurst, N.J. - The Queens college baseball team scored a pair of runs in the ninth-inning to prevail, 10-9, in a game against Felician on Thursday. Dan Walsh got the win in relief and Diego Gonzalez drove in both ninth-inning runs with a triple. Joseph Broderick picked up a save.
Queens jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game with two runs in the first and another in the second. In the first, Thomas Parish led off with a walk. Kevin Kolesar followed with a base hit. Two batters later, Gonzalez walked to load the bases. From there, Joseph Pidoto grounded into a fielder's choice that resulted in two runs. QC added another run on singles from Matthew Walsh and Parish. Parish is hitting .500 on the season.
The Golden Falcons responded with a run in the third on a pair of singles and an error and the Knights led 3-1 after three innings of play.
The Felician bats came alive in the fifth as they scored five times to take a 6-3 advantage. The runs came on three walks by Knights pitchers and a pair of triples.
Trailing 7-3 heading into the sixth, Queens showed some moxie and responded with four runs to even the score at 7-7. Nick Morici led off with a walk. Walsh singled to right center and Morici got to third. Parish laced his second hit of the game, an RBI single, and QC trailed, 7-4. Kolesar followed with a single to right center that plated Walsh. Parish scored the sixth run on a throwing error, and the Knights tied the score when Pidoto reached on an error.
The game remained knotted at 7-7 until the eighth, when QC took an 8-7 lead. Gonzalez drew a two-out walk. Pidoto singled to right and the two moved to second and third on a double steal. Walsh was hit the pitch to load the bases. From there, Joseph Paparella drove in the go-ahead run with a bases loaded walk that forced in Gonzalez. The Golden Falcons tied the score at 8-8 with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
In the ninth, Parish singled to right and moved to second on a wild pitch.Kolesar drew a walk and two batters later came the Gonzalez triple that drove in both men. Broderick gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth but earned the save.
In the win, the Knights ripped 11 hits. Parish had three hits and scored three times.Kolesar had two hits and also scored three times. Gonzalez and Matt Walsh each had two hits.
The team is now 1-2 on the year. The host Saint Anselm in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and then face Caldwell in a pair of games on Sunday.
