Box Score Flushing, N.Y. - Queens College freshman, Joseph Broderick, tossed eight strong innings in a 3-1 loss to LIU Post on Friday in Flushing. The hard-luck loser allowed just a pair of hits and two-earned runs in 8.1 innings pitched.
The Knights got a runner to third base in the first innings when Joe Morris led off with a walk. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, got to third on a passed ball, but was stranded there when the next two batters struck out.
Broderick got some defensive help in the second when LIU Post got the leadoff man on first. The next batter lifted a liner to right and Luca Altamirante made a sprawling catch, got up, and doubled the runner off at first. It happened again in the fifth, when the Pioneers hitter ripped a screaming line drive to third where Lenny Torres made the catch and doubled the runner off of first.
The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the sixth. Lebro Burnette led off the inning with a bloop double just inside the foul line in left field. After a strikeout, Burnette scored when Dan Walsh connected on a two-bagger into the left-field corner. Queens had a 1-0 lead.
LIU Post tied the game in the seventh. Tolan was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a ground out to first.
The Pioneers took the lead for good in the eighth when Bellock scored on a two-out error from Queens. They added a run in the ninth for the 3-1 win.
Stefan Sahagun was a perfect 2-2 at the plate for QC. He also had a walk.
These two teams meet in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 2, from LIU Post. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
