Knights Slug 15 Hits in Extra Innings Win Over Mercy

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team salvaged the final game of the Mercy series with a 12-11, 10-inning victory in Flushing on Sunday.  The Knights slugged 15 hits in the victory.

Mercy jumped out to the early lead once again, scoring six times in the first three innings.  The Knights responded in their half of the third by scoring three times.  Joe Morris reached on an infield single.  C.J. Gerdowsky singled down the left field line and Morris went to second.  Morris and Gerdowsky came in on an error to get Queens on the board.  Three batters after Gerdowsky, Dan Walsh blasted a double to left that scored Lebro Burnette.  QC trailed 6-3 after three innings.

Francesco Monastra came in to relieve Jonathan Russell in the fourth, and he pitched four scoreless innings.  The Knights rallied around the strong pitching to take score again in the fourth inning.  Burnette connected on a two-RBI single through the right side that scored Lenny Torres and Joseph Pidito.  QC now trailed the Mavericks, 6-5.

Mercy finally got to Monastra in eight, scoring four times to make the score 10-5 in their favor.  Greg Gonzalez relieved Monastra and escaped without any further harm.

The Knights showed some fight in the bottom of the eighth, scoring six times to take an 11-10 lead.  Morris hit a bases loaded single to score Joseph Paparella for the first run.  Gerdowsky drove in two more runs with a single to the opposite field.  Nick Osburn drove in Gerdowsky and Morris with a single.  The final run of the frame came on a Dan Walsh groundout.

QC entered the ninth with an 11-10 advantage, but a solo shot from Sal Palumbo tied the game for Mercy and forced extra innings.

In the tenth, Osburn ripped a one-out double down the left field line.  Walsh was intentionally walked.  After the second out of the inning came on a strikeout, Joseph Paparella hit a bouncer up the middle that went through and scored Osburn with the winning run, 12-11.

The QC baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, March 26, when they face Dominican from Provident Bank Park in Pomona, New York.  The first pitch is slated for 3:00 PM.
