Francis Chopper Wins Game For Knights Baseball in Extras

Box Score

Flushing, N.Y. – The Knights started a must-win four game set against the Molloy College Lions with a ray of hope at Ray Metski Field on Friday afternoon. The 10th inning 3-2 victory gave the Knights their ninth ECC win, putting them just three back of Molloy with three to play in the weekend series.

With the game knotted up at two and one out in the bottom of the tenth, Knight senior Anthony Mazzella reached first safely after lining a comebacker off Lions relief pitcher, Patrick Brown. Brown would proceed to balk Mazzella to second. This prompted the Knights to insert John Dondero as a pinch-runner at second.  Moments later, senior Tim Francis chopped a ball to second that took a funny hop over the second baseman's head and into right field. This scored Dondero and gave Francis the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the tenth off of the hard-luck loser Brown (3-4).

This lucky bounce kept QC's playoff hopes alive, as did Joe Salinitri's complete game victory. In ten innings of work, Salinitri (3-5) allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits while striking out nine. His only blips in the game occurred on a first-inning bases loaded wild pitch and a solo homer to left by Erik Pyle in the top of the second.

The Knights offense picked up Joe Sal in the bottom of the sixth when Mazzella knocked in two runs with a single to right, tying the game up at two against Molloy's starter Max Schonfeld. In the bottom of the ninth, Queens had a chance to put it away with the bases loaded and one out. Molloy's third pitcher of the afternoon, Shea Spitzbarth, worked in and out of trouble to force extras.

The Knights continue this exciting stretch of baseball with a twin bill against Molloy tomorrow afternoon on the campus of Hofstra University in Uniondale, N.Y. First pitch of game one is slated for 12:30 PM.
