Game
One
Up
until game one, the Knights last two games against Concordia ended
in walk-off fashion for either team. Today's first game was
no different, as the Knights won the game in walk-off fashion for
the third time this season.
Both Dominican
College and QC got on the scoreboard in the third inning. The
Chargers scored a run in the top half of the third on two hits off
of Knights game one starter John Dondero. Queens answered with a
Danny Muller infield single and stolen base, which allowed Frank
Duffy to score from third to give the Knights a 2-1
lead.
With the bases
loaded and two outs in the top of the sixth, Steven Varela relieved
Dondero, who would stay in the game and play centerfield, batting
ninth in the order. Varela procceded to allow an RBI single by
Dylan Ebel, which tied the game at two. The game would stay
knotted up at two until the bottom of the eighth.
Dominican College
took out their starter, Brett Schneider and put in relief pitcher
Jesse McIlwaine to start the bottom of the eighth. McIlwaine gave
up back-to-back singles to Muller and Dondero to lead off the
inning. A wild pitch sent both runners up a base, and with no outs
there were QC baserunners at second and third and nobody out. After
Joe Salinitri struck out, Nick LoBello stepped up to the dish and
lined a game-winning single to left, plating Dondero for the
winning run.
While on the hill, Dondero went
five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs (two earned) on
seven hits. He struck out two and walked five on the
afternoon. Varela earned his second win of the season, to
move to 2-0.
Game
Two
In
the “nightcap”, the Knights struggled against Dominican
College. QC starter Patrick O'Reilly started game two and
walked three batters, which all came around to score in the top of
the first. O'Reilly was saddled with his third loss of the
season.
Offensively, the
Knights got the lone run on an Anthony Mazzella sacrifice fly,
which scored Danny Muller in the first.
The Knights will
host Caldwell tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM at Ray Metski
Field.
