Baseball Falls to Concordia, 8-7, in Extra Innings

Box Score

Maybe it's the home field advantage at work, but after the Knights beat Concordia earlier in the week on a walk-off hit at home, the Clippers returned the favor on Friday afternoon in Bronxville, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning.  The home teams won each game in the home and home series.

The Knights jumped out to an early, 3-0 lead in the first as Danny Muller (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) led off with a double to left center.  From there, he scored on an RBI single from Anthony Mazzella (Wantagh, N.Y./Macarthur).  The Knights made it 2-0 when Warren Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Great Neck South) drew a bases-loaded walk and QC took a 3-0 advantage as Quentin Oexner (Clermont, Fla./Southlake) reached on an error that scored Mazzella.

The Knights extended the lead to 4-0 in the second when Muller walked and scored on Mazzella's second RBI of the day, a sacrifice fly to right.  Nuri Gunes got the Clippers back in the game with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second.  The Knights led 4-3 heading into the fifth.

QC pushed another run across as Oexner drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 5-3 for the Knights.  Mazzella picked up his third RBI of the game with a single in the sixth that scored Joe Salanitri (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and put the Knights ahead, 6-3.

The 6-3 lead was short lived as Concordia scored three times in the sixth to even the score at 6-6.  David Velazquez led off with a walk and moved to second on a balk.  Mike Manganiello walked to put two runners on base.  Erik Poldroo connected on an infield single that scored a run and Joe Gallub ripped a base hit up the middle to score two more and even the score at 6-6.

The Knights seemingly scored the game-winning run in the eighth as Mazzella hit into a bases loaded double play that saw Muller score to give Queens a 7-6 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth, Queens pitcher, Helbert Estevez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford), retired the first two batters before giving up a walk and a double to tie the game.

The game went into the tenth, where the Clippers came out on top.  With two out, Cristian Fiorito was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home the winning run.

Mazzella led the Knights with three RBI and had three hits.  Nick LoBello (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) went 4-6 in the game.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, April 6, when they host a doubleheader with Dominican College.  Game one is slated to begin at noon.
