Box Score Flushing, N.Y. (April 3, 2013) – The Queens College
Knights baseball team moved to 7-13 overall after a
bottom-of-the-ninth walk off victory over the Concordia (N.Y.)
College Clippers.
The Knights started off on the right foot, as they plated four
runs in the bottom of the first, thanks in part to a two run triple
by Warren Kelly. Jared Mancini started for Queens and went
five innings, giving up three runs (three earned) on four hits. He
struck out four and surrendered one walk. Mancini left the game
with QC up 4-3, but the bullpen could not hold the lead and Jared
received a no decision. Jonathan Russell relieved Mancini and gave
up 2 runs (both earned) in the sixth to allow Concordia to tie the
game at five.
The game stayed knotted up at five until the bottom of the
eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Nick LoBello
punched a two RBI single into right field, scoring both John
Dondero and John Eyerman. On a squeeze play, Anthony Mazzella
sacrificed home Joe Salinitri to give the Knights their third run
of the inning and an 8-5 lead going into the ninth.
QC southpaw Peter Cappiello was in line for the victory after
entering in the top of the seventh with one out and shutting down
the Clippers through four batters in the top of the ninth. With two
outs and runners on first and second, Concordia's David
Velazquez stepped up to the plate and whacked a game-tying
three-run home run to even things up at eight all. After Cappiello
allowed a single to the next Concordia batter, head coach Tom
Sowinski then called upon Steven Varela to keep the game tied at
eight, while getting the last out. Varela did just that, striking
out the Concordia's Nuri Gunes for the final out of the top
of the ninth.
The Knights' bottom of the ninth started with a
Frank Duffy single to left center. Concordia reliever Salvatore
Minichino then unleashed a wild pitch moving Duffy up to second.
After Kristian Olivieri was asked to pinch run for Duffy, he was
quickly picked off second by the catcher. With one out, Warren
Kelly, who had two solid hits on the afternoon, singled and moved
to second on Minichino's second wild pitch of the inning. The
stage was set for John Eyerman, who ripped the game-winning single
up the middle to give the Knights a 9-8 walk-off victory. Varela
earned his first win, while Minchino dropped to 1-3 on the
season.
These two teams meet up again on Friday April 5th in
Bronxville, New York. The first pitch of the nine-inning contest is
scheduled for 3 PM.
