Knights Baseball Rallies to Beat East Coast Conference Foe Mercy College 4-3

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (March 28, 2013) – The Queens College baseball team earned a hard-fought victory over the Mercy College Mavericks 4-3. With the win, Queens improves to 3-2 in ECC play.

The Knights trailed Mercy 3-1 heading into the top of the 9th. Mercy starter Tom Cummings started his ninth inning of work popping up Anthony Mazzella to first. Centerfielder Warren Kelly recorded his second hit of the day, knocking out Cummings with a one-out single. Ray Thaisz came in to pitch for Mercy College and allowed Steven Varela to reach on a throwing error.  The Knights struck while the iron was hot, as CJ Gerdowski ripped an RBI single into left, scoring Kelly.  Mike O'Dwyer came off the bench and knocked in Varela with a game-tying RBI double. Joe Salinitri capped the comeback with a go-ahead RBI single, driving in Gerdowski from third. Thaisz suffered his third loss of the season for Mercy.

ECC pitcher of the week Joe Salinitri finished up his complete game victory working in and out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth. Mercy's Anthony McQuade left the bases loaded with a game-ending fly out to center.  Salinitri (2-2) allowed just three runs (two earned) on six hits. He also struck out five on the day and walked six.

The Knights continue their 4-game series against Mercy with a matinee doubleheader at home at Ray Metski Field on Saturday, March 30th . First pitch for game one is scheduled at 12 PM.
