Box Score Brookville, N.Y. - Queens junior Joe Salanitri,
Jr. (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) tossed a complete game one-hitter
to lift the Knights to a 6-0 win over LIU Post on Sunday in
Brookville, New York. The victory helped Queens earn a series
split with the Pioneers.
Salanitri got some help right away as the Knights pushed a pair
of runs across in the first inning. Danny Muller (North
Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) singled through the right side and
moved up when John Eyerman (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) walked.
Nick LoBello (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) singled to load the bases, and
Anthony Mazzella (Wantagh, N.Y./Macarthur) ripped a base hit down
the left field line scoring Muller and Eyerman and put the Knights
ahead, 2-0.
Just an inning later, the Knights made the lead 3-0. After
Salanitri was hit by a pitch, he moved to second on a
groundout. LoBello drove him in with an RBI single to
center.
The three runs were more than enough for Salanitri, who went the
distance and allowed just an eighth-inning single with two
outs. The near no-hitter was the first shutout of the season
for Knights pitchers. Salantri walked two and struck out
11. He also had two hits and scored three times.
Queens made the score 5-0 in the sixth when Eyerman drove in a
couple on an infield single. The final run of the game came
in eighth when Eyerman lifted a sacrifice fly that scored
Salanitri.
The Knights earned a split with the Pioneers with the win and
are now 2-2 in East Coast Conference play. The team returns
to action on Tuesday, March 26, when they face Caldwell College in
New Jersey. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
