Queens College Baseball Drops a Pair to Southern New Hampshire, 5-1 & 3-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Queens, N.Y. - The Queens College baseball team was as cold as the weather on Sunday, as they dropped a pair of games to Southern New Hampshire, 5-1 and 3-1.  The Knights dropped all four games in the series with the Penmen.

Game 1:

In game one on Sunday, John Dondero (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) took the mound for the Knights and didn't pitch badly.  In his six innings of work, the freshman surrendered just one earned run.  QC pushed its only run across in the bottom of the fifth when Warren Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Great Neck South) walked to leadoff the inning.  With Kelly in motion, Steven Varela (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) poked a single through the right side of the infield, where the second baseman would have been had he not broken for second to cover Kelly, and Kelly moved to third.  The next batter, John Eyerman (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) scored Kelly with a fielder's choice.

Varela led the Knights with two hits.  In Dondero's six innings of work, he walked just one and struck out nine.

Game 2:

The second game saw Joe Salanitri (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) from his shortstop position to the mound to pitch.  He went the distance, allowing just a pair of earned runs while striking out five batters.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Knights had chances in both the sixth and seventh to tie the score but weren't able to do so.  In the sixth, Nick LoBello (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) reached base with two outs.  Mike O'Dwyer (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) followed with a walk and the tying run came to the plate in Warren Kelly.  However, Kelly wasn't able to make contact and the Knights were turned aside.

An inning later, the Knights rallied again.  Anthony Mazzella (Wantagh, N.Y./Macarthur) led off with a single and Kristian Olivieri (Harlem, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) came in to run for him.  Two batters later, C.J. Gerdowski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) went the other way for a base hit and QC had runners on first and second.  Dondero followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-1.  The next batter, Danny Muller (North Baldwin, N.Y./North Baldwin) grounded into a double play and the game was over.

The Knights return to action on Wednesday, March 20, when they face Pace at home at 3:00 PM.
