Bernardo's Raps Three Extra-Base Hits vs. Caldwell

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Junior second baseman Rob Bernardo (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with a trio of extra-base hits and two runs scored Tuesday afternoon at Ray Metski Field, but it was not enough for the Queens College baseball team, which fell by a narrow 4-3 margin to visiting Caldwell College in non-conference action.

Bernardo (two doubles) ripped his first homer of the season to left field in the bottom of the first inning to put the Knights on the board.

Caldwell plated single runs in the third, fifth, seventh and eighth innings before QC stormed back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth frame. Bernardo led off the inning with a double to right-center field, and came home three hitters later on a Nick LoBello (Fr., Baldwin, N.Y.) single to left. Sophomore Mike Shada's (Holbrook, N.Y.) left-side single plated junior Anthony Mazzella (Wantagh, N.Y.; 2-for-5) to round out the scoring.

The Knights had runners in scoring position at the end of the eighth and ninth innings, but unfortunately were unable to capitalize. Queens and Caldwell both accounted for 10 hits in the contest.

QC southpaw Jordan Wiener (Flushing, N.Y.) went 7.1 innings on the mound, surrendering 10 hits, four earned runs and three walks while striking out five.

Head coach Tom Sowinski's Knights are back in East Coast Conference action at Ray Metski Field Wednesday, when they welcome the University of Bridgeport for a 3 p.m. start.
