Baseball, Winners of Three Straight, Sweeps Mercy, 5-0 and 4-3

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Junior right-hander Steven Kaplan (Howard Beach, N.Y.) fired a complete-game four-hitter in the opening contest, while freshman Nick LoBello (Baldwin, N.Y.) drove in three runs for the second time in three contests in the nightcap Saturday, as the Queens College baseball team is now winners of three-consecutive contests following an East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep at Mercy College. The Knights won by scores of 5-0 and 4-3.

Game 1: Queens 5, Mercy 0

Kaplan faced just three hitters over the minimum, issuing just one walk and striking out two along the way.

A four-run fifth inning provided all the run support that Kaplan would need. Senior Tom Mercatante (Roslyn Harbor, N.Y.) opened the scoring on a fielder's choice, before junior Rob Bernardo (Staten Island, N.Y.) doubled home Danny Muller (Jr., No. Babylon, N.Y.) to double the advantage. Junior Steven Varela (Glendale, N.Y.) came home on a balk, before a bases-loaded walk to Chris Ramanauskas (So., Staten Island, N.Y.) forced home Bernardo.

Varela scored one inning later, also, as sophomore Joe Salanitri (W. Islip, N.Y.) singled him home.

Game 2: Queens 4, Mercy 3

LoBello and Bernardo each went 2-for-4 with a double, and it was the former's two-bagger in the top of the seventh that broke a 3-all tie and plated Salanitri with the eventual winning run.

LoBello gave the Knights a 2-0 advantage with a single up the middle in the third frame, scoring Bernardo and Varela.

After Mercy got one run back in the bottom of the third, QC tacked on one more in the fourth stanza when junior Warren Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) took third base as part of a double steal, and came home on an errant throw by the Mavericks' catcher.

Mercy scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, setting up LoBello's heroics.

Head coach Tom Sowinski's Knights are back in action Tuesday night, when they travel to Pomona, N.Y., for a 7:30 p.m. start against Nyack College in non-conference action.
