Late Rally Sends Baseball Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 8-6

POMONA, N.Y. - Juniors Anthony Mazzella (Wantagh, N.Y.), Warren Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and James Casella (Oceanside, N.Y.) each had one RBI in a four-run eighth inning Tuesday afternoon at Provident Bank Park, as the Queens College baseball team erased a two-run deficit and captured an 8-6 triumph versus St. Thomas Aquinas College.

With the Knights down 6-4 heading into the eighth frame, Mazzella (3-for-6) doubled home Danny Muller (No. Babylon, N.Y.; 1-for-5) with nobody down to pull QC within one run. Three batters later, Kelly was issued a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 6-all when sophomore Mike Shada (Holtsville, N.Y.; 1-for-4, 2 BB, RBI) crossed the plate. Casella's fielder's choice brought home Mazzella, and then freshman catcher C.J. Gerdowsky (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came home on an ensuing error in the infield to push Queens in front by the eventual final margin of 8-6.

Senior Tom Mercatante (Roslyn Harbor, N.Y.) notched two hits from his designated hitter's position, while sophomore hurler Joe Salanitri (W. Islip, N.Y.; 16 H, 5 ER, BB, 4 K) went the distance to move to 3-1 on the season.

Head coach Tom Sowinski's Knights are next in action Thursday afternoon, when they travel to Pleasantville, N.Y., for a 3 p.m. non-conference contest at Pace University.
