Baseball Slugs Past Nyack, 8-2

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Junior second baseman Rob Bernardo (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while classmate Anthony Mazzella (Wantagh, N.Y.) ripped his second multi-run homer in as many days Monday afternoon at Ray Metski Field, as the Queens College baseball team moved to 2-1 on the young season with an 8-2 victory in its home opener over Nyack College.

Sophomore pitcher Matthew Cascello (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned the victory on the hill for the Knights by throwing six innings of two-hit, two-walk, four-strikeout shutout baseball. Meanwhile, junior transfer Jared Mancini (Pt. Jefferson, N.Y.) scattered three hits while allowing two runs and striking out two over three innings pitched to pick up his first save in a QC uniform.

Mazzella smacked a two-run, one-out homer to left-center field in the bottom of the first inning to put the Knights on the board for good against the previously-undefeated Warriors (3-1). Bernardo singled home junior shortstop Danny Muller (No. Babylon, N.Y.; 2-for-3, 2 R) in the second frame, while Queens scored four runs in the third stanza to go up by a 7-0 count. Muller and Joe Salanitri (W. Islip, N.Y.) had RBI singles in the rally.

Bernardo's single in the fifth inning plated junior outfielder Warren Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) to push the hosts' advantage to 8-0, before Nyack added two runs in the eighth frame to account for the final score.

Head coach Tom Sowinski's Knights are back in action at Ray Metski Field Friday afternoon, when they welcome No. 8 Southern Connecticut State University for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
