Baseball Notches Split Against C.W. Post

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College baseball team broke into the win column at Ray Metski Field on Saturday afternoon, as the host Knights captured the back end of an East Coast Conference doubleheader with a 7-3 victory over C.W. Post. The visiting Pioneers won the opener by a 3-0 count.

Game 1: C.W. Post 3, Queens 0

C.W. Post took game one today with a score of 3-0. The Knights had three combined base hits from Steven Varela, Connor Burke and Robert Gaertner.

The Pioneers had four hits starting with a one-out single from Ryan Sloane, who eventually scored in the second. Casey McKay scored in the sixth, followed by Matt Simone's run in the seventh.

Kyle Contino had six strikeouts and only three walks with just two of his three runs allowed coming of the earned variety for the Knights.

Game 2: Queens 7, C.W. Post 3

Queens took game two, as Eduardo Torres went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, and Gaertner went 3-for-3. Michael Scro and Varela both had two hits as well.

The Knights took an early lead in the first with Anthony Mazzella scoring on Varela's double. Varela scored on Connor Burke's single to the right side, while Burke eventually scored after Crisandry Javier was hit by a pitch.

Queens added a run in the third with Gaertner scoring on Torres' single to the right side. C.W. Post answered back in the fourth with a run driven in by Nick Compito's single.

The Knights continued to tack on runs in the fourth and fifth inning, with Gaertner scoring on Scro's double to left center and Torres scoring on Warren Kelly's double to left field, respectively.

Gaertner moved to 2-5 on the hill for the 2011 campaign, firing six innings of seven-hit, five-strikeout ball while just one of his three runs was earned. Varela closed out the seventh inning with two strikeouts.

The two teams will wrap up their five-game series Sunday afternoon in Brookville, N.Y., with opening pitch slated for 12 noon.
