BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Queens College baseball team fell on hard times defensively Wednesday afternoon, as the Knights fell to host C.W. Post in an East Coast Conference matchup, 15-6. Anthony Mazzella went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI, while Gabriel Guerrero (2-for-2) reached base safely in all four plate appearances and scored twice.
Queens (4-21, 2-9 ECC) made six errors in the infield, resulting in nine unearned runs on the afternoon. C.W. Post (4-23, 3-7 ECC) plated nine runs over the first three innings, including a six-run third frame to take the lead for good.
Mazzella's one-out single to right-center field scored Eduardo Torres (two runs, two walks) in the top of the fourth to put Queens on the board, before the Pioneers added five more runs in their half of the inning to push their lead to 14-1.
The Knights responded with four runs in the fifth inning, with Connor Burke scoring on a wild pitch before Mazzella ripped a bases-clearing double to left-center to score Torres, Guerrero and Steven Varela (two walks, RBI).
C.W. Post plated one more run in the sixth inning, while Queens tacked on one run in the ninth when Varela's grounder to short scored Guerrero – who had moved to third base on a double by James Casella.
The two teams will continue their weekend series Friday afternoon at Queens' Ray Metski Field, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
