FLUSHING, N.Y. – Warren Kelly went 3-for-3, while pitchers Kyle Contino and Steven Varela combined on a five-hitter and benefitted from a three-run sixth inning Saturday afternoon, as the Queens College baseball team (10-28, 8-16 ECC) captured a 4-2 victory in the front end of an East Coast Conference doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport. The visiting Purple Knights (22-10, 15-7 ECC) secured a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap as the teams split the twinbill.
Game 1: Queens 4, Bridgeport 2
Contino (2-5) went 6.1 innings, scattering five hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts, before Varela picked up his fifth save of the season after firing three pitches and inducing a game-ending double play ball. Michael Scro drove in two runs, including a game-tying squeeze bunt in the sixth inning that set the score at 2-2. Gabriel Guerrero (2-for-3, double) then blooped a single down the left-field line, bringing home Kelly with the eventual game-winning run.
Bridgeport scored one run in the first inning, before the Knights tied the score in the fourth inning when Scro's groundout scored Anthony Mazzella (1-for-1, two walks). The Purple Knights took back the lead at 2-1 in the top of the sixth, which set the stage for the host side's come-from-behind triumph.
Game 2: Bridgeport 7, Queens 2
The Knights took a 2-0 lead in support of Robert Gaertner with single runs in the first and second innings, behind Mazzella's long RBI double to center field and Bernardo's two-bagger to right field, respectively.
Gaertner carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning, before Bridgeport put up a five-spot in the frame to take the lead for good.
Chris Ramanauskas and Guerrero (1-for-2) each had one run scored in the loss.
The teams will wrap up their five-game series Sunday afternoon, in a 2 p.m. start at West Haven (Conn.) High School.
