FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College baseball team placed numerous runners on the base paths Sunday afternoon at Ray Metski Field, but were unable to capitalize as the Knights were swept in a doubleheader by visiting Molloy College. The Lions took home an 8-2 decision in the opening contest, before securing the nightcap by a 6-1 count.
Game 1: Molloy 8, Queens 2
Molloy starting pitcher Jason Lembo (4 BB, 8 K) allowed just one hit over six innings pitched, and the Lions took advantage with runs in the middle and late innings to pull away for good. Molloy took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of play on a RBI single by Ryan Akers (2-for-5), and added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Robert LaRusso (3-for-4), who finished a triple shy of the cycle. LaRusso followed up with a long two-run homer to left field in the seventh inning, while the visitors added three more in the top of the ninth to stake claim to an 8-0 advantage.
Queens got untracked in the bottom of the ninth with two runs, including Eric Reyes scoring on a RBI ground out by Crisandry Javier before pinch-runner Kyle Contino (following a Michael Scro pinch-hit double) came home on James Casella's one-out double to left-center field.
Michael Shada added a base-knock for the Knights, while Robert Gaertner (10 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, K) threw seven innings on the hill in a losing effort.
Game 2: Molloy 6, Queens 1
The Lions (15-11, 7-2 ECC) pitching staff combined to hurl a six-hitter in the seven-inning contest, while a three-run first inning set the tone offensively for the visitors.
Michael Shada was a bright spot on offense for Queens (4-20, 2-8 ECC), as he went 1-for-2 with a double, walk, and a sixth-inning sacrifice fly that plated Casella (leadoff walk) to cut the Knights' deficit to 5-1. Also of note at the dish was Connor Burke's 2-for-4 performance, while Anthony Mazzella and Brandon Ferguson each had singles in the nightcap.
Molloy's Erik Pyle went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI to lead his team's offensive charge.
Head coach Tom Sowinski's Queens team is back in action Wednesday afternoon (April 6), when it travels to Brookville, N.Y., to kick off its five-game ECC set at C.W. Post, at 3 p.m.
