FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College baseball team tied a season-high with 10 runs scored Friday afternoon at Ray Metski Field, but that total would not be enough as visiting University of Bridgeport plated 18 runs en route to an eight-run victory. For the host Knights, Michael Scro drove in four runs, Anthony Mazzella went 3-for-6 and Connor Burke roped a two-run homer – his first of the season.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Queens (9-27, 7-15 ECC) responded with a six-run third frame to take a four-run lead. Steven Varela (2-for-2, 2 R) and Mazzella hit back-to-back RBI singles, before Scro's double plated both runners. Burke then sent a 2-0 pitch over the left-center-field fence in the next at-bat, pushing the Knights' edge to 6-2.
The hosts tacked on three more runs in the fourth stanza to up their lead to seven. Warren Kelly (2-for-4) lofted a sacrifice fly in the rally, before Scro's base-knock to right field sent home Mazzella and Varela once again.
Bridgeport (21-9, 14-6 ECC) scored three runs in the fifth, eight in the sixth, and five in the seventh innings, respectively, to take control for good.
The teams continue their weekend series at Ray Metski Field on Saturday, with a doubleheader of seven-inning contests getting underway at noon.
