FLUSHING, N.Y. – Steven Kaplan fired a complete-game four-hitter, while Anthony Mazzella went 3-for-4 at the plate Wednesday afternoon at Ray Metski Field, as the Queens College baseball team captured its first East Coast Conference series of the season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Mercy College.
The Knights (9-26, 7-14 ECC), winners of three out of five against the Mavericks (15-19, 8-12 ECC) in the 2011 campaign, also received 2-for-4 efforts at the dish from Michael Scro and Warren Kelly. Steven Varela, Gabriel Guerrero and Connor Burke all drove in one run, while Kaplan threw 74 of his 115 pitches for strikes, issuing just two walks while striking out three.
Mercy, batting as the home team in a contest originally scheduled to be played in Dobbs Ferry, picked up one run in the bottom of the first inning when Anthony Simon drove in Graig Lauricella.
From there, Queens answered in the top of the second with two runs, taking the lead for good. Burke drove in Kelly on a left-side single, before Guerrero's base-knock to the same spot brought home Michael Shada with the eventual game-winning run.
Varela's two-out single in the top of the seventh brought home Robert Gaertner, who singled and stole second base.
Head coach Tom Sowinski's Knights are back in action Friday afternoon at Ray Metski Field, as the University of Bridgeport comes to Flushing for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
