Baseball Falls at Bridgeport, 7-4

Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Steven Varela and Anthony Mazzella both went 2-for-4 Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Yard, but the Queens College baseball team dropped an East Coast Conference at the University of Bridgeport, 7-4.

The Knights (8-26, 6-14 ECC) put one run on the board in the top of the first inning, when Warren Kelly's sacrifice fly drove in Robert Gaertner with his first of two runs on the day.

Bridgeport (20-9, 13-6 ECC) countered with one run in the bottom of the first, and one more in the third frame to take a 2-1 advantage.

Queens battled back with three runs in the fifth frame, securing a 4-3 lead. Gaertner ripped a one-out single to score James Casella (reached on a triple), before scoring on Mazzella's three-bagger to tie the game at 3-3. Mazzella then came home on a wild pitch, giving the visitors back the lead.

However, the lead was short-lived for the road side, as Bridgeport countered with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth innings, respectively, to account for the victory and the final score.

Gabriel Guerrero took the loss on the hill for the Knights, allowing six hits, six walks and five earned runs to go with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.

Head coach Tom Sowinski's Queens side is back in ECC action Wednesday afternoon, when it plays host to Mercy College in a make-up contest. The visiting Mavericks will bat as the "home" team in the game, which gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
