UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Sophomore Anthony Mazzella stayed hot for the Queens College baseball team by going a combined 4-for-6 with a double Saturday afternoon, but the Knights were unable to sustain a consistent offensive effort as they were swept by host Molloy in an East Coast Conference doubleheader. The Lions took the first game by an 8-1 count, while capturing the sweep with a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.
Game 1: Molloy 8, Queens 1
Mazzella was the only hitter on either side to notch multiple hits in both contests, as he ripped his fifth double and later scored in the top of the seventh on Robert Bernardo's first-pitch single. But the Knights were stymied most of the game by Chuck Fontana, who fired six innings of five-hit, 10-strikeout baseball to move to 4-0 on the season.
Molloy scored four runs in the bottom of the first to knock out QC starter Matthew Cascello (.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, K), and never looked back. Up 5-0 heading into the sixth frame, the Lions tacked on three runs in the stanza to seal the win and even the weekend series at that point at 1-all.
Steven Varela was 1-for-3 with his fifth double of the season for the Knights, while Warren Kelly, Chris Ramanauskas and Eduardo Torres (double) each had one hit in the contest.
Game 2: Molloy 4, Queens 1
After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Eric Reyes hit a one-out triple in the fifth inning and came home one pitch later on Connor Burke's double down the left-field line to knot the game at 1-all for Queens (4-18, 2-6 ECC). But Molloy (13-11, 5-2 ECC) added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and an insurance run in the sixth to take control.
Mazzella went 2-for-3 in the game for QC, while Michael Shada added one hit offensively. Kyle Contino (6 IP) went the distance on the hill for the Knights, scattering six hits and allowing three earned runs while striking out seven.
The teams will wrap up their five-game weekend series Sunday at Queens' Ray Metski Field. The twinbill will consist of a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning affair, with first pitch slated for 12 noon.
