FLUSHING, N.Y. – Pitchers Matthew Cascello and Kyle Contino combined to allow just five hits over 14 innings pitched Saturday afternoon at Ray Metski Field, as the Queens College baseball team swept past visiting Mercy College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader, by scores of 5-0 and 2-0, respectively.
Game 1: Queens 5, Mercy 0
Cascello faced just three batters over the minimum and struck out four Mavericks (11-17, 4-9 ECC), as the host Knights (8-24, 6-12 ECC) put up four runs in the fourth inning and one more in the sixth to provide all the offense Cascello would need.
Michael Shada's one-out single through the left side drove in Warren Kelly (one-out triple) with the eventual game-winning run in the fourth, before coming home along with Michael Scro on a two-run double by Connor Burke. Burke touched home plate a couple of batters later on a single to left by Eduardo Torres, giving QC a 4-0 edge.
Burke led off the sixth inning with a double, and came home once again on a single by Torres to provide for the final score.
Cascello had to throw just 68 pitches (48 strikes) to pick up his second win of the year, while Mercy's John Tricario went just four innings in taking the loss.
Burke, Shada and Torres all went 2-for-3 in the contest to support the winning cause.
Game 2: Queens 2, Mercy 0
Hitting was at a premium in this contest, as the teams combined for just five hits (three by Mercy) over seven innings of play. Contino picked up his first victory of the year by pitching around three hits and seven walks in 6.1 innings of play, and struck out eight Mercy batters. Steven Varela picked up his fourth save of the season for the Knights with a perfect two-thirds of an inning of work.
Torres was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning, then stole second and, on a double steal with Robert Gaertner (walk), third base. The former then scored the lone run of the inning when he scampered home on Billy Dring's (CG, 6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K) wild pitch to give Contino the only run support he would need.
Warren Kelly singled to lead off the fourth frame, and came home on Burke's sacrifice fly.
These two teams will wrap up their five-game set Sunday morning at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., with a 10:15 a.m. first pitch.
