Knights beat Pace 3-2 for first win of 2011

White Plains, N.Y- The Queens College Baseball team managed to squeeze out their first victory of the season against what was an undefeated Pace University.  With three runs in the bottom of the ninth the Knights were able to put the Setters away with a 3-2 victory at Possidomo Field. With the win the Knights improve to 1-6 while the Setters drop to 3-1.

Freshman righthander Robert Gaertner pitched a complete game gem to help lead the Knights to victory. Gaertner was touched up for just two runs only one earned in the top of the third inning on an error and a balk.  It would be the only blemish in a solid outing.  Gaertner pitched 9.0 innings giving up only 4 hits while striking out 8 Pace hitters.

In what seemed to be a pitchers' duel the Knights were only able to muster up one hit in the first eight innings. The lone poke came from sophomore Robert Bernardo who smoked a fastball to right center in his second at bat in the third inning.

In the ninth the Setters went to the bullpen and the Knights capitalized on the move. After a Bernardo strikeout, Chris Ramanauskas got things going with a leadoff walk and Steven Varela followed with a hit by pitch. Both runners were able to advance on a wild pitch setting the stage for Warren Kelly's RBI single down the first base line. With runners on the corners and up 2-1 Pace made another move to the bullpen bringing in Patrick Chaputian. Chaputian made quick work of Michael Scro striking him out on four pitches. With the Knights down to their last out, freshman shortstop Michael Shada drew a hard fought walk to load the bases.  Senior Eric Reyes drew a walk as well to tie the game at 2-2. With Joe Trezza at the Plate a wild pitch by Chaputian would plate Warren Kelly for the winning run.
