Baseball Falls to St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-1

CHESTER, N.Y. – The Queens College baseball team ran into a hot pitcher Friday afternoon at The Rock Sports Complex, as the Knights fell in their East Coast Conference opener against host St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-1.

Queens (2-13, 0-1 ECC) managed just four hits off of Spartans (7-8-1, 1-0) pitching on the day, including starting pitcher Robert Frank, who went eight innings, scattered three hits, allowed one earned run and two walks, while striking out 14 batters.

St. Thomas Aquinas rapped 10 hits and stole eight bases, scoring two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings, while tacking on an insurance run in the seventh frame to support Frank.

The Knights picked up their lone run on the day in the top of the eighth inning, when Anthony Mazzella led off with a double and came home two batters later on Warren Kelly's fielder's choice.

Steven Kaplan was tagged with the loss on the hill for QC, going seven innings, allowing nine hits and all five runs (four earned) while striking out one hitter. Michael Shada, Steven Varela and Chris Ramanauskas had one hit apiece in the contest.

The two teams will continue their weekend series Saturday, with a 12 noon doubleheader at The Rock Sports Complex.
