FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College baseball team (2-10) fell in its third and final game of the weekend against Concordia College (3-11), as the visiting Clippers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play and held on for a 10-6 victory.
For Queens, Michael Shada went 2-for-3 with a walk, double and triple, while Chris Ramanauskas hit a RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning. James Casella, Warren Kelly and Connor Burke picked up one hit apiece for the Knights. Starting pitcher Matthew Cascello went 7.1 innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs and three walks, while striking out two Concordia hitters.
The Clippers' leadoff hitter, Joe Gallub went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in support of victorious pitcher, Keith Malanga (8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, ER, 3 K). T.J. Walsh went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Luis Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Jason Berrios also drove in two runs on the day for Concordia.
The visitors scored a pair of runs in the top of the second and third inning to stake Malanga to a 4-0 lead. James Anderson lofted a sacrifice fly to plate Walsh in the second frame, before Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch. In the third inning, Billy O'Connell's base-knock plated Gallub, before Walsh lofted a sacrifice fly to score David Perlleshi.
Queens got single runs back in the bottom of the fourth and sixth stanzas to pull to within a 4-2 count. Robert Gaertner reached on an leadoff infield error in the fourth, and scored two batters later on Shada's triple to left-center field to get the Knights on the board. Casella reached on a leadoff bunt in the sixth, and moved around the bases courtesy of a sacrifice bunt from Gaertner, and on an advancement to third on Kelly's flyout, before ultimately scoring on a passed ball.
Concordia seemed to pull away for good when it scored six runs (one earned) off Joseph Manfre (1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R) in the top of the ninth inning to register a 10-2 edge. However, Queens came back to score four runs off Clippers reliever Morgan Williams in the bottom of the ninth before the rally was thwarted. Pinch-hitter Crisandry Javier lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Shada, before Ramanauskas doubled home Steven Varela. Burke scored when Anthony Mazella reached on an infield error, and then Ramanauskas was plated on Casella's fielder's choice.
Head coach Tom Sowinski's Queens side is back in action Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 15), when it plays Dominican College at 3 p.m.
