Mallon Powers Queens at the Plate in Saturday Action at Molloy

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Continuing their four-game East Coast Conference series against Molloy, the Queens College baseball team traveled to Mitchel Field for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
 
Senior right fielder Vincent Mallon (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Knights offensively across both games, going 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and three runs scored. Junior Michael Vilardi (Massapequa, N.Y.) contributed with two hits and a walk.
 
In game one, both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings before Queens broke through in the third. With two outs, Mallon singled up the middle and stole second to move into scoring position. Rookie center fielder John Harkins (Babylon, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single to right field, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.
 
Molloy answered in the bottom half of the inning to even the score at 1-1.
 
Queens regained the lead in the fifth inning as Mallon was hit by a pitch and later advanced on a fielder's choice. Capitalizing on a throwing error, he came around to score and put the Knights ahead 2-1.
 
Vilardi delivered a strong outing on the mound, matching a season-high seven innings while striking out five to keep Queens in control.
 
The Lions, however, rallied late, tying the game in the seventh before scoring four runs in the eighth. The Knights were unable to recover, stranding seven runners on base in a 6-2 loss.
 
In game two, Molloy jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Mallon quickly responded. The senior launched a three-run home run. his second of the series, to tie the game at 3-3.
 
However Molloy responded with 13 unanswered runs to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 16-3 victory.

Next Pitch

The Knights conclude the series against the Lions on Sunday, March 29 at Hennekens Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
