Game Day Preview: ECC Postseason Berth on the Line as Softball Concludes Regular Season with Three Conference Doubleheaders

FLUSHING, N.Y. – An East Coast Conference postseason spot is on the line as the Queens College softball team wraps the 2024 regular season with three doubleheaders on the week.
 
The Knights conclude their series against the Lions of Molloy University on Tuesday (Apr. 23) afternoon with a trip to Rockville Centre before hosting the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday (Apr. 24) afternoon in their final home doubleheader of the year.  
 
The regular season concludes in Buffalo on Friday (Apr. 26) morning against the Saints of D'Youville University.

Scouting the Knights (13-23 Overall, 6-8 ECC Record)

  • Head coach Amy Delmore and the Knights open the week with an overall record of 13-23 and 6-8 in ECC Play.
    • The Knights are in third place in the conference standings with an overall record of 6-8 with six games left to play.
      • Queens needs two wins in their final six games of the year as they hold the tiebreaker over Mercy University.
      • But a Mercy DH loss to CSI on Saturday will help Queens clinch the final spot to the ECC postseason tournament if the Knights go 0-6 on the week.
  • Freshman utility Caylea Campbell (Murrieta, CA) leads the way on both sides of the field as the rookie holds a team-high .415 batting average with 39 hits, 13 doubles, four home runs, 13 runs scored, 13 walks to go with 24 RBI.
    • In the circle, the rookie has recorded a team-high nine wins in 120.0 innings allowing 135 hits, 57 earned runs, 43 walks, and has struck out 82 batters with an ERA of 3.33.
  • Campbell has been named to the ECC Weekly Report Sheet on six separate occasions.

  • While senior first baseman Jenny Murphy (East Islip, N.Y.) is having an excellent year to cap off her Knights career batting .284 with 31 hits, two doubles, four home runs, five walks, and 13 runs scored to go with 22 RBI on the year.

Molloy University Lions Preview (24-16 overall, 12-2 ECC)

Overall Record (Since 2000): 25-50-1
Current Streak: L3
Last Win: 9-0 (A, 5/3/23)
Last Loss: 2-3 (H, 4/21/24)
  • Molloy enters the week with an overall record of 24-16 and 12-2 in ECC play.
  • The Knights trail the overall series 25-50-1. Last season the Knights went 1-3 against the Lions in ECC play but upset them in the first round of the ECC tournament before the Lions eliminated the Knights to advance to the ECC final  
  • The Knights are looking to earn a series split having dropped two heartbreakers in the first two meetings of the year as the Lions earned a 3-2 extra-inning victory over holding on to a 3-2 game two victory Sunday afternoon in Flushing.
  • Chrissie Huhn leads the Lions with a team-high batting average of .404 with 55 hits, eight doubles, two triples, one home run, 10 walks, 33 runs scored, and 22 RBI.
  • While Alex Burns is batting .365 with 46 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 11 walks, 25 runs scored, and 38 RBI.
  • In the circle, Sophia Mariottini leads the Lions with 12 wins in 132.0 innings pitched allowing 131 hits, 47 earned runs, 17 walks, and has struck out 99 batters.

St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans Preview (24-18 overall, 12-2 ECC)

Overall Record (Since 2000): 41-34
Current Streak: L19
Last Win: 1-0 (H, 4/22/18)
Last Loss: 1-7 (A, 4/15/24)
  • The Spartans enter the week with an overall record of 24-18, 12-2 in ECC play and will match up against Post on Tuesday before traveling to Flushing on Wednesday afternoon.
  • The Knights lead the overall series 41-34 but have been led winless in the last 19 games against the Spartans.
  • Queens is looking for their win over the Spartans since the 2018 season when they earned a DH split in Flushing on April 22, 2018.
  • Eliana Raposo leads the offense with a team-high batting average of .374 with 49 hits, ten doubles, four triples, five home runs, 34 runs scored, six walks, and 37 RBI.
  • While Elyse Marcano holds a batting average of .371 with 53 hits, nine doubles, five triples, one home run, nine walks, 36 runs scored, and 24 RBI.
  • In the circle, Raposo has totaled a team-high 12 wins in 128.2 innings allowing 160 hits, 57 earned runs, 43 walks, and has struck out 54 batters.

D'Youville University Saints Preview (9-29 Overall, 3-13 ECC Record)

Last Win: 9-4 (H, 4/6/24)
Last Loss: 0-1 (H, 4/6/24)
  • D'Youville enters the week with an overall record of 9-29 and 3-13 in ECC play. The Saints are coming off having dropped a doubleheader at Mercy on Saturday afternoon.
  • The Knights trail the overall series 4-10 but have been held winless in Buffalo in the last three series.
  • Halie Furkas leads the offense batting .321 with 36 hits, 10 doubles, 12 walks, 16 runs scored, and 26 RBI.
  • While Gianna Adamo is batting .352 with 38 hits, six doubles, three triples, 18 walks, 17 runs scored, and 20 RBI.
  • In the circle, Sarah Parzych leads the Saints with five wins having pitched a total of 106.2 innings allowing 179 hits, 104 earned runs, 46 walks, and has struck out 60 batters.

If the Knights Clinch a Postseason Spot

The East Coast Conference postseason tournament is set for May 2 to May 4 with the Regular Season Champion slated to host the three-day tournament. More Details will follow next week.
