ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Opening the final week of the regular season, the Queens College softball team traveled to Rockville Centre Tuesday afternoon for an East Coast Conference doubleheader against the Molloy University Lions at the RVC Sports Complex.
The Knights were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances, leaving 17 runners on base across the twin bill as Molloy earned the sweep by scores of 6-2 and 7-0.
Game One Recap – Queens 2, Molloy 6
Queens collected eight hits in the opener, highlighted by multi-hit performances from junior
Olivia Wanser (Westbury, N.Y.), rookie
Carla Chiaramonte (Middle Village, N.Y.) and sophomore
Mia Pineiro (North Babylon, N.Y.), who combined for six hits, one run scored, and two RBI.
The Lions struck quickly with five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early advantage.
Queens answered in the top of the second when Chiaramonte singled to left before Pineiro delivered an RBI double to get the Knights on the board. Sophomore
Brigid Hood (Wantagh, N.Y.) followed with a double to right, putting two runners in scoring position, but Molloy worked out of the jam to preserve its lead.
After the opening frame, rookie right-hander
Nellie Donahue (Levittown, N.Y.) settled in and limited the Lions offense over the next five innings.
The Knights added another run in the fifth as Wanser lined an RBI single up the middle to trim the deficit to 5-2. Queens later loaded the bases with the tying run on deck, but Molloy again escaped without further damage.
The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth inning to secure the opener.
Game Two Recap – Queens 0, Molloy 7
Queens threatened early in the nightcap as senior
Allie Parascandola (East Quogue, N.Y.) and junior
Caylea Campbell (Murrieta, CA.) opened the game with back-to-back singles, but the Lions stranded both runners to keep the contest scoreless.
Both teams left opportunities on the bases through the opening two innings before Molloy took advantage of a defensive miscue to grab a 1-0 lead in the third.
The Lions added to their advantage in the fourth and sixth innings while holding the Knights offense in check to complete the doubleheader sweep.
