Missed Opportunities as Baseball Falls Short Against Adelphi Tuesday Afternoon

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to non-conference play, the Queens College baseball team (26-12 overall) welcomed the Panthers of Adelphi University (17-21 overall) to Flushing to conclude the two-game series at Hennekens Stadium.

Having defeated the Panthers 5-4 on the road earlier in the season, the Knights looked to earn their series sweep Tuesday afternoon as the Panthers visited Flushing for the first time since the 2017 season.

However the Knights would be held to six hits led by sophomore Joseph Cornielle (Bayside, N.Y.) (2-2 AB, BB) first career multi-hit performance to pace the batting lineup, while sophomore Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, BB), sophomore Juan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y.) (1-5 AB), senior Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, R, BB) and freshman Andrew Ramirez (Walnut, CA) (1-4 AB, BB) combined for four hits on the day.

The Knights earned 10 walks on the day but the offense would leave 13 base runners stranded as the Panthers earned the series split to the final score of 8-1.

Adelphi took a 3-0 lead after the top of the second inning but Queens would leave the bases loaded in the home frame of the second inning as they were unable to cut into their deficit.

The visitors would take a 4-0 lead as they added a run in the top of the fourth.

Rosa began the home half of the fourth with a single to right field but the Panthers would execute a double play to avoid any potential damage.

As the Knights worked out of a lead-off base runner in the top of the fifth, the Panthers would get two quick outs before Queens attempted another rally.

Ramirez tallied a two-out single up the middle before a walk and a single from Filip through the right side loaded the bases for the second time of the day. But the Panthers would keep the Knights off the scoreboard on a fielders choice third out to stay ahead 4-0.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the home half of the sixth inning, Hoskins singled up the middle before Cornielle earned a walk to give Queens two base runners with no outs.

A wild pitch would advance both runners into scoring position before the Panthers got the first out. A passed ball would allow Hoskins to score from third as the Knights cut the deficit down to 4-1.

But Adelphi would avoid any further damage as they got the final two outs to hold a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh inning before they added four more runs to earn the series split against the Knights.

UP NEXT: Head coach Chris Reardon and the Knights continue non-conference play on Wednesday (Apr. 26) afternoon as they travel to Wilmington, Del with a matchup against the Wildcats of Wilmington University. First pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
