WILMINGTON, DEL. - Continuing non-conference play, the Queens College baseball team
(26-13 overall) traveled to Wilmington, Del. with a matchup against the Wildcats of Wilmington University
(25-18 overall) to conclude the two-game series in a midweek matchup.
Hitting the road for the midweek non-conference matchup in Wilmington, Del for the first time since the 2016 season, the Knights playing without four regular starters would fall short as the Wildcats earned a series split with a 16-4 victory at Wilson Field.
The offense tallied eight hits led by the freshmen pair of
Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2B, 2R) 17
th multi-hit game of the season, and
Andrew Ramirez (Walnut, CA) (2-3 AB, RBI) ninth multi-hit game of the season and third in six games.
While sophomore
Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2RBI), sophomore
Juan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, RBI), senior
Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, R) and senior
Colin Diez (Levittown, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, R) combined for five hits on the afternoon.
The Knights opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as with one out, Diez singled to left center field before Jimenez recorded a single down the right field to advance Diez to third base.
Filip would give Queens a 1-0 lead with a RBI single down the left field before Rosa tallied the fourth straight single to put the Knights up 2-0 before a double play got the Wildcats out of the inning.
As the Knights left a combined three base runners stranded in the third and fourth inning of play, the Wildcats would take a 11-2 lead after the completion of the fourth inning.
Queens would attempt a rally in the top of the fifth inning.
Rodopoulos began the fifth with a single to right field before Diez earned a walk to give the visitors two base runners. A fielders choice would erase Diez at second base for the first out but the Knights would have runners on the corners.
Filip would cut the deficit down to 11-3 with his second RBI of the day before a wild pitch put runners in scoring position.
The Wildcats get the second out before Queens loaded the bases with a walk. The Knights would get the second run of the inning as Ramirez tallied a RBI single up the field to bring Queens' deficit down to 11-4.
A thunderstorm and rain delay would bring the game to a halt to disturb the Knights rhythm.
Resuming play, the Wildcats would get the final out of the inning before the home side added a run in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Knights to the final score of 16-4 and earn the series split against the Knights.
