FLUSHING, N.Y. – As Sunday morning showers passed and field conditions made the final game of the four-game East Coast Conference series playable, the Queens College baseball team
(26-11 overall, 10-6 ECC) welcomed the Mavericks of Mercy College
(11-28 overall, 7-13 ECC) to Hennekens Stadium.
As the sun made an appearance on the day, it would be runs that rained inside Hennekens Stadium as both teams combined for 35 hits and 19 runs but the Knights would have to settle for a 2-2 ECC series split as Queens fell 10-9 in game four of the series.
The Knights were led by rookie
Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) (4-5 AB, 2B, HR, 3RBI, 3R) fourth four-hit performance of the season, while sophomore
Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) (3-5 AB, 2B, HR, 4RBI, R) recorded his eight multi-hit game of the season as the duo combined for seven hits and seven RBI on the afternoon.
While senior
Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) (3-5 AB, 2B, RBI, 2R, BB), sophomore
Juan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, R, BB), and four other Knights combined for nine hits on the day.
It would be a run-fest throughout the day as each side scored a run in mostly every half inning of play as the fourth game of the series lasted over three hours.
The Mavericks opened the scoring taking an early lead before Queens responded off the bats of Jimenez and Filip who tallied his first home run of the season in the first inning of play as the Knights took an early 4-1 lead.
The first four innings of play saw a combined 12 runs scored as the game was tied 6-6 heading into the fifth inning of play.
As the Knights held the Mavericks scoreless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning of play, Queens offense would tack on a run in the home half of each inning as they took a 9-6 lead heading into the final two innings of play.
But Mercy would rally back as they scored four unanswered runs over the final two innings of play to take a 10-9 lead heading into the bottom half of the ninth.
Down to their last three outs, the Mavericks would get the first two outs before a walk, and a hit by pitch would give the Knights the tying run at second and the winning run at first base as the home side was down to their last out.
With the dangerous bat of Jimenez up, the rookie laced the first pitch he saw to right field to record his fourth hit of the afternoon but a timely throw from the right fielder would beat the tying run at home plate as the Mavericks were able to salvage the series split 2-2.
UP NEXT: Head coach
Chris Reardon and the Knights return to non-conference play on Tuesday (Apr. 25) afternoon as they conclude their two-game series against the Panthers of Adelphi University in Flushing. First pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
