Game Day Preview: Baseball Continues ECC Play against Mercy

FLUSHING, N.Y.  – It will be a four-game week as the Queens College baseball team continues East Coast Conference play as they open a four-game series as the Mavericks of Mercy College. 
 
Game one of the series takes place in Flushing on Friday (Apr. 21) afternoon before the Knights travel to Dobbs Ferry for a Saturday (Apr. 22) afternoon doubleheader. The series concludes in Flushing on Sunday (Apr. 23) afternoon. 
 
Scouting the Knights (Overall Record: 24-9, 8-4 ECC)
 
The Knights are coming off sweeping their first ECC series of the season as they defeated Lincoln University 4-0 on the road.  
 
In the recent NCBWA East Regional poll, Queens moved up to the seventh spot as they earned 37 points.
 
Following strong performances, sophomore Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) was awarded Player of the Week honors, while freshman Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) was awarded his third straight ECC Rookie of the Week honors.
 
Over six games on the week, Cisco batted .444 with a slugging % of .833 with eight hits, two doubles, one triple, one home run, six RBI, nine runs scored, earning seven walks and four stolen bases. Against Wilmington, the sophomore fell short of hitting for the cycle going 3-3 AB with three extra bases hits as Queens completed a comeback rally to earn a crucial 9-8 victory Wednesday afternoon. The Long Island City native reached base in all games as he earned a combined seven walks, while totaling 15 bases with four extra-base hits and executed four double plays on the week.
 
Over six games on the week, Jimenez batted .458 with 11 hits, three doubles, eight RBI, two stolen bases, and seven runs scored as the rookie tallied three multi-hit games to lead the offense. Jimenez tallied two hits with a double and two RBI as Queens earned a crucial 9-8 victory over Wilmington in regional play before a big 4-6 AB performance with two doubles, and two RBI helped Queens complete a comeback rally with a 10-8 victory in game one over Lincoln in extra innings including a big third out to force extra innings at home plate.
 
On Sunday (Apr. 16) afternoon, the Knights completed the series sweep over Lincoln winning the doubleheader to the score of 8-3 and 8-4. 
 
In game one, the offense tallied 11 hits led by senior Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) (4-5 AB, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2R) first four-hit performance of the season while the duo of sophomore Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) (2-5 AB, RBI, 2R) and freshman Andrew Ramirez (Walnut, CA) (2-3 AB, RBI, R) combined for four hits. 
 
In game two, the offense tallied eight hits led by multi-hit performances from Jimenez (2-3 AB, 2RBI, 2R), Juan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, 2B, 3RBI, R), and Filip (2-3 AB, 2B, RBI), while the duo of Rodopoulos (1-3 AB, 2R, BB) and Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) 
 (1-3 AB, RBI, R, BB) combined for two hits as the Knights recorded eight runs for the second straight game. 
 
As a team, the Knights are batting .316 with 340 hits, 230 RBI, 253 runs scored, and have earned 174 walks in 1075 At-Bats. 
 
Leading the Way
  • Fontana leads the way with a team-high batting average of .402 with 47 hits, 26 runs scored, 11 doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 39 RBI.
    • Fontana has tallied 15 multi-hit games (tied for first) with six three-hit games and with the latest one coming against Lincoln (Apr. 15).
  • Jimenez is batting .384 with 43 hits, 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 27 runs scored, and a team-high 41 RBI.
    • Jimenez has 13 multi-hit games to go with a career-high four-hit performance against SCSU (Apr.2) as he recorded three home runs and eight RBI.
  • Cisco is batting .377 with 40 hits, 39 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 21 RBI.
    • The sophomore has tallied 11 multi-hit games with four three-hit performances and seven multi-RBI games on the season. 
  • Hoskins is batting .333 with 33 hits, five doubles, and five home runs, with 26 RBI and 24 runs scored. 
    • The senior has tallied eight multi-hit games on the season with one five-hit performance.
    • The Freeport native became the first Knight to hit for the cycle in game two of the SCSU (Apr. 2) series (5-5 AB, 2B, 3B, HR, 3RBI)
  • On the mound, junior Jordan Sanabria (Woodside, N.Y.) leads the team with five wins, while senior Dean Fazah (Queens, N.Y.) and freshman Christopher Naronis (Floral Park, N.Y.) have combined for eight wins. 
  • Junior Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.) leads the Knights and the conference with eight saves on the season.

Mercy enters the week with an overall record of 9-26 and 5-11 in conference play. The Mavericks are coming off a 3-1 series victory over Staten Island with a 16-8 victory on Sunday afternoon. 
 
As a team, the Mavericks are batting .262 with 306 hits, 145 RBI, 177 runs scored, with 105 walks in 1166 at-bats.
 
Jaden Caballero leads the team with a batting average of .307 with 43 hits, eight doubles, two triples, 25 runs scored, and 14 RBI. While Nolan Giblin is batting .302 with 39 hits, four doubles, two triples, 16 runs, and 18 RBI. 
 
Scott Scheppy leads the team with two wins on the mound.
 
Next Pitch: Head coach Chris Reardon and the Knights return to non-conference play on Tuesday (Apr. 25) afternoon as they welcome the Panthers of Adelphi University to Flushing. First pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
