Game Day Preview: Baseball Returns to Non-Conference Play against Felician & SCSU

FLUSHING, N.Y.  – Coming off a 3-1 East Coast Conference series victory, the Queens College baseball team returns to non-conference play beginning on Thursday (Mar. 30) afternoon. 
 
The Knights welcome the Golden Falcons of Felician University to Flushing to conclude the two-game series before opening a three-game series against NE10 foe Southern Connecticut State University Owls on Friday (Mar. 31) afternoon. The series concludes in Flushing with a Sunday (Apr. 2) afternoon doubleheader.
 
Scouting the Knights (Overall Record: 14-5)
 
The Knights are coming off a 3-1 week having earned their first conference series victory of the season over College of Staten Island 
 
In the recent NCBWA East Regional, Queens remain at the eighth spot having earned 26 points.
 
Following another strong performance, senior Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned an East Coast Conference Honor Roll spot. 
 
Over four games, Fontana batted .471 with a .647 slugging percentage on eight hits, three doubles, four RBI, two runs scored, and earned two walks. Against CSI, the senior recorded three multi-hit games including his third three-hit performance in the 10-9 comeback victory on Friday before he added his second three-RBI performance in the 15-5 victory over the Dolphins and concluded the week with two doubles in the nightcap. In the field, the senior recorded 26 putouts with six doubles play.
 
The Knights are coming off an 11-3 victory over Staten Island on Monday afternoon. 
 
In Monday's victory over the Dolphins, the offense registered double-digit hits for the third time in the four-game series as they recorded 14 hits led by junior Francis Segarra (Bronxville, N.Y.) (4-5 AB, RBI, 3R, SB) second four-hit performance, and junior Nick Barreiros (Seaford, N.Y.) (3-4 AB, 2B, HR, 3RBI, R) first three-hit performance and second multi-hit game of the season. The duo combined for six RBI while five other Knights recorded a RBI.
 
While junior Jordan Sanabria (Woodside, N.Y.) earned his leading fourth victory of the season before junior Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.) shut the door for his team and conference-leading sixth save of the season. 
 
As a team, the Knights are batting .311 with 186 hits, 121 RBI, 132 runs scored, and 98 walks in 599 At-Bats
 
Leading the Way
  • Fontana leads the way with a team-high batting average of .439 with 25 hits, 12 runs scored, four doubles, one triple, three home runs, and 15 RBI.
    • Fontana has tallied eight multi-hit games with three-hit games and a team-high three-hit performance coming against Bloomfield (Mar. 19).
  • Segarra is batting .382 with a team-high 29 hits, 23 runs scored, two doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 20 RBI. 
    • Segarra has tallied a team-high 10 multi-hit games including two four-hit games with the latest one coming against Staten Island (Mar. 27)
    • The junior is tied with five multi-RBI games including a career-best five RBI against Chestnut Hill (Feb. 26)
  • Senior Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) is batting .340 with 17 hits, two doubles, and three home runs, with 18 RBI and 10 runs scored. 
    • The senior has tallied four multi-hit games on the season with a three-hit performance and has recorded a season-high three RBI on two separate occasions.
  • Rookie Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) is batting .321 with 18 hits, four doubles, one triple, 11 runs scored, and 16 RBI.
    • Jimenez has six multi-hit games to go with a career-high three-hit performance against Adelphi (Mar. 21).
  • On the mound, Sanabria leads the team with four wins, while senior Dean Fazah (Queens, N.Y.) has tallied three wins. 
  • Junior Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.) leads the Knights and the conference with sixth saves on the season.

Felician enters Flushing with an overall record of 11-17 and are coming off an 8-2 victory over Bridgeport on Tuesday (Mar. 28) afternoon. 
 
The Knights defeated Felician 4-0 in their first meeting of the season back on Mar. 16 as they earned their first shutout over their conference foe in program history.
 
As a team, the Golden Falcons are batting .270 with 244 hits, 145 RBI, 59 runs scored, and 52 walks in 438 At-Bats. 
 
Dauri Genao leads the team batting .374 with 37 hits, 19 runs scored, five doubles, one triple, and 16 RBI. While Haiden Walters is batting .320 with a team-tied 20 RBI with 33 hits, three doubles, two triples, one home run, and 20 runs scored. 
 
Logan Waltz leads the team with five wins on the mound.

Southern Connecticut enters the week with an overall record of 16-5 and are on a five-game win streak.
 
In the recent NCBWA East Region poll, the Owls are tied for sixth Golden Beacom. 
 
It will be the first meeting against the Owls since the 2020 season which saw the Knights earn a 13-4 victory at home before falling in the doubleheader in New Haven. 
 
As a team, the Owls are batting .316 with 234 hits, 202 runs scored, 180 RBI, 58 doubles, three triples, and 13 home runs in 741 At-Bats.
 
Billy Sullivan leads the offense batting .395 with 32 hits, seven RBI, one triple, 19 RBI, and 30 runs scored. While Andrew Eng leads the team with 30 RBI batting .295 with 23 hits, seven doubles, five home runs, and 25 runs scored. 
 
Nick Guarino leads the team with six wins on the season. 
 
Next Pitch: Head coach Chris Reardon and the Knights continue non-conference play on Tuesday (Apr. 4) afternoon as they welcome the Cougars of Caldwell University to town. First pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
