Baseball Opens East Coast Conference Play Against Dolphins of CSI

FLUSHING, N.Y.  – Coming off a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Panthers of Adelphi University Tuesday (Mar. 21) afternoon in non-conference play, the Queens College baseball team opens East Coast Conference play with a four-game series against the Dolphins of College of Staten Island. 
 
The series begins in Flushing on Friday (Mar. 24) afternoon before the series shifts to Staten Island for a Sunday (Mar. 26) afternoon. The four-game series concludes at home on Monday (Mar. 27) afternoon.
 
Scouting the Knights (Overall Record: 11-4)
 
The Knights carry a six-game win streak into their conference series opener having defeated Felician, Bloomfield, and Adelphi. 
 
In the recent NCBWA East Regional, Queens returned to the top 10 of the poll as they find themselves ranked eighth in the region earning 21 points. 
 
Following a strong performance over five games, senior Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned East Coast Conference Player of the Week, while lefty Liam Pulsipher (East Moriches, N.Y.) was awarded Pitcher of the Week from the league office. 
 
Over the course of a 5-0 week for Queens, Fontana stayed hot for the Knights as the senior went 10-16 AB, with nine RBI, one triple, three home runs, five runs scored, and two walks as he batted a scorching .625 with a slugging % of 1.313 as he recorded 21 total bases. The Wantagh native recorded three multi-hit games including back-to-back three-hit performances against Bloomfield Sunday afternoon. 
 
Pulsipher went 1-0 on the week pitching a season-best of 7.1 innings allowing three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts in the 4-0 shutout victory over Felician University Thursday evening. The southpaw entered the game as a reliever and would go on to restrict the bats of Felician to three hits, while working four clean innings to earn his second victory of the season and the Knights' first shutout victory over Felician in program history.
 
In Tuesday's victory over the Panthers, rookie Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) led the Knights with a three-hit performance with two RBIs before junior Jordan Sanabria (Woodside, N.Y.) earned his leading third victory of the season before junior Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.) shut the door for his team and conference-leading fifth save of the season. 
 
As a team, the Knights are batting .290 with 132 hits, 85 RBI, 95 runs scored, and 78 walks in 455 At-Bats. 
 
Leading the Way
  • Fontana leads the way with a team-high batting average of .381 with 16 hits, 10 runs scored, one triple, three home runs, and 11 RBI.
    • Fontana has tallied four multi-hit games with two 2-hit games and a team-high three-hit performance coming against Bloomfield (Mar. 19).
  • Segarra is batting .345 with a team-high 20 hits, 17 runs scored, two doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 18 RBI. 
    • Segarra has tallied a team-high seven multi-hit games including a four-hit game against Post (Feb. 25).
    • The junior leads the Knights with a team-high five multi-RBI games including a career-best five RBI against Chestnut Hill (Feb. 26)
  • Rookie Jimenez is batting .333 with 15 hits, two doubles, one triple, six runs scored, and 13 RBI.
    • Jimenez has four multi-hit games and is coming off a career-high three-hit performance against Adelphi (Mar. 21).
  • Senior Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) is batting .333 with 11 hits, two doubles, three home runs, with 11 RBI and seven runs scored. 
    • The senior has tallied three multi-hit games on the season with a season-best three hits and recorded a season-high three RBI against Goldey-Beacom (Mar. 10).
  • On the mound, Sanabria leads the team with three wins, while four Knights have combined for two wins each.
  • Junior Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.) leads the Knights and the conference with five saves on the season.

In Conference play against the Dolphins, the Knights are 6-0 with the lone loss coming in a non-conference matchup on May 7, 2021.
 
Staten Island enters the week with an overall record of 6-9 with the Dolphins on a one-game win streak having defeated Chestnut Hill in a doubleheader split on Friday (Mar. 17) afternoon.
 
As a team, Staten Island are batting .247 with 108 hits, 51 RBI, 59 runs scored, and 52 walks in 438 At-Bats. 
 
Michael Kehoe leads the team with a batting average of .444, 12 hits, 5 RBI, five runs scored, four doubles, and one home run. While Shendi Ulaj is batting .316 with 12 hits, 10 RBI, three runs scored, two doubles, and one triple. 
 
Christian Rice and Ryan Kehoe have combined for a team-leading two wins each.
 
Next Pitch: Head coach Chris Reardon and the Knights return to non-conference play on Thursday (Mar. 30) afternoon as they welcome the Golden Falcons of Felician University to town. First pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
