Game Day Preview: Baseball Continues Non-Conference Action Against Panthers

FLUSHING, N.Y.  – Following their 5-0 week record the Queens College baseball team returns to action in another five-game week beginning with Adelphi University on Tuesday (Mar. 21) afternoon. 
 
Scouting the Knights (Overall Record: 10-4)
 
Last week Queens went 5-0 on the week earning a shutout victory over Felician for the first time in program history before completing a four-game series sweep over Bloomfield at home.
 
In the recent NCBWA East Regional, Queens returned to the top 10 of the poll as they find themselves ranked eighth in the region earning 21 points. 
 
Following a strong performance over five games, senior Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned East Coast Conference Player of the Week, while lefty Liam Pulsipher (East Moriches, N.Y.) was awarded Pitcher of the Week from the league office. 
 
Over the course of a 5-0 week for Queens, Fontana stayed hot for the Knights as the senior went 10-16 AB, with nine RBI, one triple, three home runs, five runs scored, and two walks as he batted a scorching .625 with a slugging % of 1.313 as he recorded 21 total bases. The Wantagh native recorded three multi-hit games including back-to-back three-hit performances against Bloomfield Sunday afternoon. 
 
Pulsipher went 1-0 on the week pitching a season-best of 7.1 innings allowing three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts in the 4-0 shutout victory over Felician University Thursday evening. The southpaw entered the game as a reliever and would go on to restrict the bats of Felician to three hits, while working four clean innings to earn his second victory of the season and the Knights' first shutout victory over Felician in program history.
 
As a team, the Knights are batting .288 with 120 hits, 81 RBI, 90 runs scored, and 75 walks in 417 At-Bats. 
 
Leading the Way
  • Fontana leads the way with a team-high batting average of .405 with 15 hits, nine runs scored, one triple, three home runs, and 10 RBI.
    • Fontana has tallied four multi-hit games with two 2-hit games and a team-high three-hit performance coming against Bloomfield (Mar. 19).
  • Segarra is batting .370 with 20 hits, 16 runs scored, two doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 18 RBI. 
    • Segarra has tallied a team-high seven multi-hit games including a four-hit game against Post (Feb. 25).
    • The junior leads the Knights with a team-high five multi-RBI games including a career-best five RBI against Chestnut Hill (Feb. 26)
  • Senior Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) is batting .333 with 11 hits, two doubles, three home runs, with 11 RBI and seven runs scored. 
    • The senior has tallied three multi-hit games on the season with a season-best three hits and recorded a season-high three RBI against Goldey-Beacom (Mar. 10).
  • On the mound, five Knights have combined for 10 wins with Pulsipher and sophomore Nick Kozerski (Hicksville, N.Y.) combining for one shutout game on the season.
  • Junior Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.) leads the Knights and the conference with four saves on the season.

Tuesday's game will be the 34th meeting against Adelphi and the second straight road meeting between both sides. It will be the first of two meetings this season with the second meeting to come in Flushing in late April.
 
Adelphi enters the week with an overall record of 8-9 with the Panthers on a two-game losing streak. 
 
As a team, Adelphi are batting .307 with 186 hits, 116 RBI, 138 runs scored, and 75 walks in 606 At-Bats. 
 
Anthony Cipri leads the team with a batting average of .361, 22 hits, 15 RBI, 12 runs scored, three doubles, and two home runs. While Johnny Catuosco is batting .313 with 15 hits, seven RBI, 11 runs scored, and one double. 
 
Eight different Panthers have combined for wins on the season.
 
Next Pitch: Head coach Chris Reardon and the Knights open East Coast Conference play on Friday (Mar. 24) afternoon as the Dolphins of College of Staten Island come to town. First pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
