LINDENHURST, N.J. – Continuing Non-Conference play Thursday evening on the road, led by the pitching duo of sophomore
Nick Kozerski (Hicksville, N.Y.) and senior
Liam Pulsipher (East Moriches, N.Y.), the Queens College baseball team
(6-4 overall) earned their first shutout of the season with a 4-0 victory over Felician University Golden Falcons
(7-12 overall) at Breslin Field.
Playing under the lights, the Knights outhit the home side 9-5 as the trio of junior
Francis Segarra (Bronxville, N.Y.) (2-5 AB, R), senior
Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, R), and rookie
Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, BB) recorded multi-hits, while senior
Jayson Rodopoulos (Scarsdale, N.Y.) (1-5 AB, 2RBI, R), senior
Reed Hoskins (Freeport, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, RBI, R, BB) and sophomore
Juan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y.) (1-5 AB) tallied a hit apiece.
On the mound Kozerski
(1.2 IP, 2H, K) and Pulsipher
(W 2-1, 7.1 IP, 3H, 5K, BB) shutout the Golden Falcons limiting them to five hits, while only one walk and striking out six batters on the evening with the East Moriches native earning his second victory of the season.
With the win, Queens earns their first shutout victory over their regional foe and earned their fifth win over the Golden Falcons in program history.
Thursday's win is the first win on the road since the 2015 season when the Knights earned a 10-9 win on March 19, 2015, not counting last season's neutral site 17-10 victory in Myrtle Beach.
The Golden Falcons began the game getting the first two before Segarra continued the inning with a single up the middle before Queens earned a walk. But the home side would keep the game scoreless getting the last out.
After Kozerski began the bottom of the first getting the first out, Felician would put runners on first and second with a single and hit by a pitch before Queens worked out of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
After Pulsipher relived Kozerski in the bottom of the second, the southpaw would limit the Golden Falcons to one hit through the next four innings of play.
Heading into the top of the sixth, with the game still scoreless and both teams combing for six hits, the Knights would break the game open.
As sophomore
Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) earned a walk to begin the top of the sixth, a single to center field by Jimenez and Fontana's single to left field would load the bases for the Knights.
With no outs, Hoskins earned a walk to give Queens a 1-0 lead before the Golden Falcons got back to back outs.
With bases still loaded and two outs, Rodopoulos would deliver with the biggest hit of the evening with a two-RBI single to left field to score Hoskins and Fontana giving Queens a commanding 3-0 lead.
After Pulsipher worked his third straight clean inning, Queens would add an insurance run as Jimenez was caught stealing second base not before allowing Segarra to take advantage from third and giving the Knights their fourth run of the game after seven and half complete innings of play.
After retiring 12 straight batters, the Golden Falcons would tally their first hit since the bottom of the third inning. But the East Moriches native would stay composed as he got the next two batters to strike out and fly out to left field to end the inning.
Despite running into trouble in the bottom of the eight, Pulsipher would ensure there would be no comeback on hand as he kept Felician off the scoreboard in the eighth before completing the job with his fourth cleaning inning of the game as the Knights picked up a crucial 4-0 East Regional victory and their sixth of the season.
