Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Sweep over Bears Saturday Afternoon

FLUSHING, N.Y. – As non-conference play continued with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, the Queens College baseball team (8-4 overall) welcomed the Bears of Bloomfield College (4-11 overall) to Hennekens Stadium.

In game one, the Knights broke out the bats early as they scored 12 runs over the first three innings of play to earn a 12-3 victory before completing a 5-3 game two comeback victory to earn their first doubleheader sweep of the season.

In the opener, junior Francis Segarra (Bronxville, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, HR, 4RBI, 3R), senior Anthony Fontana (Wantagh, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, R) (1-2 AB, HR, 2RBI, R, BB) and freshman Jorsixt Jimenez (Queens, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, 2B, 3RBI) combined for nine RBI as Segarra and sophomore Juan De La Rosa (Bronx, N.Y.) (2-2 AB, 2B, R, BB) knocked in multi-hit games.

On the mound, junior Jordan Sanabria (Woodside, N.Y.) (W 2-1, 4.0 IP, H, 4K) earned his second victory of the season allowing only one hit, while striking out four batters.

The Knights wasted no time breaking out the bats on a sunny afternoon in Flushing by recording 12 runs in the first three innings of play, while Sanabria limited the Bears to one hit over the first four innings of play.

In the nightcap, the Bears would respond first as they tallied two hits for three runs off game two starter Dean Fazah(Queens, N.Y.) (W 2-1, 5.2 IP, 3H, 3ER, 3BB, 3K) in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.

But Queens wasted no time in responding back as they tallied three hits to take a 5-3 lead.

Sophomore Matt Filip (Maspeth, N.Y.) earned a walk to begin the inning before Jimenez earned the second walk of the inning. A single to right field by Fontana (1-3 AB, R) would load the bases for the Knights before Reed Hoskins(Freeport, N.Y.) (1-1 AB, 2RBI, R, 2BB) cut the deficit down to 3-2 with a two-RBI single down the right field line.

Queens would earn their third walk of the inning to reload the bases before the Bears got the first out.

A fourth walk of the inning would tie the game before sophomore Marc Cisco (Long Island City, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, 2B, RBI) delivered with a two-RBI double to give the Knights a 5-3 lead.

After allowing two hits in the top of the second, Fazah would limit the Bears to one hit over the next 3.2 innings of play before junior Danny Gargano (Middle Island, N.Y.)(S4, 1.1 IP, 2H, 3K) relived the lefty.

After the righty got the first batter to fly out to left field to begin the top of the seventh, a hit by pitch before back-to-back singles loaded the bases for the Bears.

With the Bears looking to send the game to the bottom of the seventh, Gargano would battle to earn his fourth save of the season over the next two at-bats.

The Middle Island native would get the second out on a nine-pitch at-bat before he got the Bears batter to strike out.

Down to their last out, he would get the last out with another swing strikeout on six pitches to earn his fourth save of the season and complete the Saturday afternoon sweep over the Bears.

UP NEXT: Head coach Chris Reardon and the Knights conclude the four-game non-conference series against the Bears with Sunday (Mar. 19) afternoon doubleheader in Flushing. First pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
